Snooker

I moved from Cambridge to Sheffield in Christmas 2020 at the height of Lockdown 2. When life returned to "normal" 6 months later I said I'd try a bit of everything (except line dancing) Sheffield had to offer, so tomorrow I'm at the morning session (the cheap one) at the Crucible.

Never seen snooker live, hardly watched it on TV since the days of Thorburn and Davis and Parrot.

Anyone watch ? Who the hell are Anthony McGill and Liam Highfield ?
has that Maguire/Murphy game finished yet?

I watch snooker all the time now, after hardly watching it from about the boring Hendry era to a few years ago. When I finish watching it (around midnight) I think “what a waste of my time, I could have spent it much more productively”. I’ll do the same tonight and the next fortnight.

I was watching Murphy last night and thought Werbeniuk was back.
hard watch that one.

I enjoyed my first live snooker at the Crucible this morning, McGill gritting it out 10-7 in a safety exhibition. 8 frames in 3+ hours.

Sheffield seems a good home for the World Championships. Great view (better than TV), real ales at the bar, impressively silent crowd.

I can't help thinking I'd have beat either of those two after 4 pints of IPA at Fulbourn Social Club post work in my late 80s heyday (top break 15), mind.

For some reason I can never warm to Bingham. Using the nickname "Ball-Run" as a snooker player seems odd. It's almost like he's admitting any success is down to luck.

I think my preferences for the semi's would be Yan Bingtao, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Judd Trump & Jack Lisowski with an O'Sullivan/Trump final.

Bit of a predictable semifinal lineup. Really need Trump or Williams to win it but just know it’ll be Ronnie or Higgins.

Trump’s mind isn’t in the right place for me. That session he had against Bingham where he lost 5 or 6 frames in a row will ruin him in a final. Neither Higgins or Ronnie will let him back in if he does that again, he really was all over the place.

I remember 20 years ago that once you passed the age of 30 you were past it in this game (Hendry/Davis/White etc etc...
Now we have Trump a young whipper snapper at 32 in the SF’s against a 47 year old and two 46 year olds!

O Sullivan v Williams final with O Sullivan winning going on what I’ve seen so far.

Most of snooker is in your head now that most people can pot balls from anywhere.

Therefore Higgins, Ronnie, Williams etc will always be near the top until their eyes/concentration tart to wane.

They‘ve still got to put the hours/grind on the practice table to stay where they are with all the young Chinese players chasing their tail.

Fair play to all 3 for doing that after all these years when I know myself how boring this can become over time.
