Women's Team - 2021/22

Depends how serious the FA is about growing the women's game together with how important respective clubs feel about building up the quality of their squads.

I am concerned at the way the club appears to be going at present and how committed it is to bringing in quality to replace the players moving on.

It's pretty obvious that Chelsea are managing to bring in top players and do not appear to be losing players, so how are they managing to do that ?

Arsenal are another team that don't appear to be affected but I really have no idea about wages across the teams.

I think at first the cap meant that we wouldn't get too many hugely embarrassing scorelines in the WSL, where the big clubs who invest just destroy those who don't.

Now though the league is stronger overall and maybe it needs changing so that we can compete with the top European teams for players more often.

That would be a definite improvement as far as I am concerned.

Let's hope City are interested in adding quality as from posting from an OP earlier in the thread, there doesn't look as though there is much coming through from the Academy.

Following the FA Cup defeat Gareth Taylor said “We’ve got young talent coming through so the future’s bright.”
The MCWFC Academy has Jayne Ludlow as technical director. The Development Squad play in the FA WSL Academy League Northern Division.
The info that I’ve been able to glean from the FA site reveals that the season just ended (March 2022) saw our Womens team finish 6th out of 7.
P 20 W 5 D1 L14 Pts16. The title was won by the Ragettes ….
P 20 W16 D1 L 3 Pts50…………..
Doesn’t look like a conveyer belt of talent coming through to me !!
Any Bluemooners have more info about the Development Squad??
It doesn't look good for us that a team that has only been in existence for a couple of seasons wins the academy league. Given that we are so strong in the men's league you would think that the women's would be better than 6th out of 7. No wonder no one is coming through.

Would love to know why (apart from Jill and Steph) any of the women dont stick around too long. It would also seem that we have a policy of British only (in the main) and Chelsea and Arsenal don't, as much. I know Stanway is a Barrow girl so no need to portray her as a big City fan, but maybe the girls need to chase the money (fair enough) as the career is shorter and no where near as lucrative as the mens. Hope the keeper isn't next.

Those that go, go abroad and come back to the UK after. There have been some strange ones. The two yanks obviously were not going to stay, but the third Dalkemper, who surprisingly signed a longer deal, left before the end of her contract. Just seems a few strange goings on. imho,
Agreed. The club need to be a bit more upfront. Does Taylor provide the same press conference access as Pep?

Most of our youngsters were busy playing first team games for half the season or seemed to be to be fair.

No they weren’t…..Taylor persisted in playing that useless Taieb in goal and first team players out of position. Jess Park and Ruby Mace are part of the first team squad - on the bench mainly - and Keating as well.
Did any Development Squad players actually feature this season? Did a couple feature in an FA Cup match?? I can’t even find an up to date list of any Development Squad players. An earlier post suggested that 2 had accepted scholarships in the USA and had left MCFC - who they were I have no idea. Can’t find anything about the MCWFC Development Squad on the Manchester City website.
When you look at the incredible sustained success of the mens EDS and Academy sides in the last few years………….WTF is going on with the Womens side??

From what I understand they've had an "academy" for a lot longer than they have had a first team.
True. It’s why Ella Toone ended up at City for a time. The Ragettes had no first team for their Academy players to progress to. When they did set up their team several of their former Academy players returned - Toone, Russo, Zelem etc.

I looked up the league table after reading your original post, they finished with 50 points and a goal difference of 68. We finished with 16 points and a goal difference of -16. I do remember reading, when their first team formed that their academy players would be happy as they would now be able to stay. We have had a women's team for a fair while now. How long has the academy been going? Surely they should be doing better than that by now. That is a huge difference in points. They have had a number of players out on loan too.

Been thinking on this a while, but you know what I'd like to see?

I'd like to see, or know, that the Men's and Women's team mix in team training once a week (no shirt swapping, of course) for an afternoon to switch up the women's play in how they can make a difference on the pitch.

That means understanding their positions, being confident to make the crucial pass, trusting their colleagues and better team play.

It sounds a bit mad, but I wouldn't be expecting full on challenges, but a compromise of tempo to boost the women's game.

I would view it like a fighter training above their weight class/ skillset going on to take that into their actual division come fight day.

It would, also, give Taylor a better idea of what his team can do.

Call me crazy...

Hi Crazy - Just for rondo's would be good. When you look at the intensity of our men's and compared to the footage of Utd's men there is a gulf even between those two.

I didn't know Jill Scott had a coffee shop in Northenden, but some of the men supported he when it opened. I think our guys wouldn't be against it.

I addressed the gulf, in a fashion, in my commentary.

The men dropping down a level of intensity and forcing the women to up theirs, I think should be something to explore.

It's, also, why I fashioned in the fighter methodology.

Heavyweight boxers use quicker, lower weighted fighters to spar with as it changes their own intensity in the fight.

Constantly training at one's own standard changes nothing when you're trying to develop.

Is it OK to now call Jill Scott a “has bean”?? (Sorry)
Great servant to the club. When I lived in Manchester (1984-2007) the idea that there would be a trendy coffee house in Northenden was about as likely as MCFC winning anything at all……..

Not exactly City-related but it is Womens football. Barcelona vs Lyon just kicked off in the Champions League Final and it is free to view. Two best teams in the world and Amandine Henry just scored a screamer for Lyon.
