The Conservative Party

We don't want them. They can stand as independents.
It would certainly be unfair to other potential candidates for their constituencies. By all means quit the government, vote with the opposition and join the Labour Party as members if they want, but they shouldn't automatically be given the whip to become part of the PLP.

Yours is the right exclamation. Levelling up is a great notion and a mighty fine slogan. It will remain these things until Bozo is hung and quartered.
I know that significant bits of infrastructure costs are funded from investment from the private sector but many massive infrastructure projects are all at taxpayers expense.
How do you level up when just 30 seconds thought produces these projects and approx costs. Tideway London, £4B; Crossrail 19B; HS2 P1 to Brum £45B; probable Heathrow extension £14B; probable refurb of the Houses of Parliament £22B?
Mind you the NE could get a new coal mine and Lancs will probably be opened up to fracking again.

I heard MP's and commentators over the weekend banging on about the future of rail travel being in the balance without "modernisation" ( job cuts ) - they keep saying travel is down on rail by 20%. If that were all the case and not propaganda why would they press ahead with the HS2 vanity project?

Lining their mate’s pockets with contracts, when covid hit they pressed on with parts of it to make sure it had to be done whatever happened with the pandemic. Another black hole of money the Tories have created.

Agree.

Anyone that leaves their party should trigger a by election as far as I'm concerned.

I’ve posted a few times my belief that the project should have started in the North and moved south in stages. And speculated that eventually the decision would be taken that the project would not move north beyond Brum... aside from buying the land and upgrading some stations.
I wonder when the next forecast for overspend will be released?

It's an issue I agree. You have to question the nature of anyone who could stand for election as part of Johnson's Tory party and then want to sign on to a Labour party that is still left of centre left and pro EU as soon as BJ is gone - everything tories are not.

Generally all parties take defectors to them as a win. But its increasingly looking less like a win for Labour as these people bring the stench of the nasty tory party with them. And if i was a campaigner in a constituency that had one of these characters I'd be thinking no thanks can we put up one of our own.

Next time Johnson needs a dead cat is my best bet

Because by the time it's done, no-one will be able to afford to drive.

"Truss as good as admitted that the treaty had only ever been a sham. Just something to con the more stupid backbenchers in her own party – that’s some low water mark – that the government could Get Brexit Done. Or, as it turned out, Get Brexit Don’t." (John Crace)

So.............. elected 2019 and got used to the salary they could only dream of outside politics and the expenses they are therefore prepared to cross the floor............

I'm wary of how/why the Telegraph are stating this - to make the Red Wall look less trustworthy and therefore less worth helping? to get them to name themselves??

I don't really see what they gain, unless something crazy has happened in Conservative circles. They'd have to be incredibly popular locally to keep the nomination, and apparently aren't sure if they're Conservatives or Labour.

They should agree it in principle only for Keir Starmer to get up and block their path up the aisles and show them the door.

All it takes is for the Cons to show a no confidence in Johnson and this whole view turns to ash in an instance.

There are many clones of Starmer-like politicians in the Tory party, which would make Starmer redundant.

If they're like Starmer, they are not in the Tory party.

Times reporting that 6 Conservative MPs are considering defecting to Labour. Sounds more of a threat at this stage but likely to add to the pressure on Johnson.

Apologies, Gabriel, for hijacking your post, but it explains what I said in another thread; that the leap between the Cons and the current Labour Party is not very far at all.

Even taking into account that the threat of of defection is there, the fact that there's a threat of a step across the aisle would be a thought process unthinkable under the last leadership and it says a lot.

Thanks Gabriel for allowing me the example.
