How good were Pink Floyd?

Alwaysa loved Floyd.. Bought the original gatefold DSOTM with the posters ands stickers. And, like any 14 year old, stuck the posters on my wall and stickers on my school bag, thereby ruining my chances of ever cashing in by selling an original LP when I was a grey-haired middle-aged has been.
One of the best experiences I ever had was about 30 years ago. On a mates trip to Glencoe, we had parked up to camp. Opened the back of the car in the middle of the glen and blasted 'Sorrow', 'On the turning away' and 'C Numb' from Delicate Sound out of the stereo. The sound was phenomenal, almost spritual. Of course it helped that the nearest human was about 10 miles away. Pure noise pollution magic.

You have triggered my own Flloyd car tunes experience...

Back in the day ,I drove a mates car up to Sunderland ..to see City play , under Mancini...

I didn't play any cds on the way there,just concentrating on getting to roker,parking the car ,getting a pint,and getting in the ground..
I parked on some side streets,not far from the bowling alley where I nipped in for a cheap pint before the match.

It was early Mancini days.we controlled the match..it was the first time we ever saw" The Yaya Express "where Toure picked the ball up from the edge of our box and ran 70 yards on the counter,slipped it to Tevez..who missed an open goal by skying his shot over the bar....

It got to the 86th min...I decided" I,'ll take a draw here" after all that pressure but no goals away from home...I left my seat and picked my way confidently ...but discreetly back to my mates car,a lovely Mercedes auto..I'd parked it with a quick getaway in mind and was happy that my day had gone to plan..of sorts..I spotted the car,but in the very next instance...I spotted a little old man,with a cap on, dancing a jig of delight on a street corner ..with a transistor radio to his ear and a rolled up newspaper ..........That sinking feeling that I knew only too well as a City fan came over me...Sunderland had scored .we had lost...

I got into that car ,eased out of the terraced side streets...and headed home down the A1....I put the CD player on it was Floyd.and when Comfortably numb came on it couldn't have caught the moment better.

I always think of 'Sunderland lost 1nil 'when CN is played.

I've never liked Sunderland.
 
I hated them. Later on I appreciated them, I'v listened to nearly all of theirs. Not a big of the Wall stuff, Syd Barret years were mostly shit (imo) but Astonomy Domine was very trippy and edgy, I liked that it mirrored what the Doors were doing at the exact same time in the US.

I dont think anything in the world beats Dark Side of the Moon for talent or creativity etc.

What's your opinion of See Emily Play.....
I only heard this track on You tube footage for the first time a couple of weeks ago.it surprised me.i liked it.

The early stuff I’d characterise as a few great singles/individual tracks. From Echoes onwards, shit got real.

Yeah I haven't delved into their history at all,twas just a random stumble across that footage.
Sometimes,in life,music comes to you....but not always at the release date lol
I was born around the time of SEP but have only just heard it!
Jesamine by The Casuals is another track which totally blew me away on a chance hearing,took 50 odd years for me to hear it...but I got there

One of life’s great pleasures that isn’t it, discovering tracks you really like for the first time,
long after issue :-)

yup I quite liked that album. That and Arnold Lane and the bicycle song. I was more interested in Syd Barret by that time though so was watching it for his musical talent, I am not sure he was that talented just different pov with all the drugs and mushrooms.

I saw that show last night in Salt Lake, great show!
 
How good were Pink Floyd? some of their music is sublime. We are talking Beethoven , Bach, Handel.

Popped up on our pub quiz this week, did Salt Lake; bigamist capital of the world apparently.

Oh yeah, back to Rog; well even if the tour title is tongue in cheek the end can’t be far off can it?
I don’t care if he’s getting plenty of ‘support’ with the vocals these days. I deffo want to go and hear those songs again one more time and pay tribute to his genius.
In fact off to hunt for his current set list now to whet the appetite - glad to hear it was great last night!

It’s a strange City, that’s for sure. A couple of decent venues and not a bad music scene. Presently sitting in one of the weird bars

Just had a look: set is impressive. Starting out with the track Gilmour normally saves for near the end is an interesting move! Always pleased to hear Sheep too - though wouldn’t surprise me if he swaps it for Dogs by next summer.

I noticed this thread had resurfaced a short while ago. I’ve never read it but the answer is they were fucking brilliant.

Anyway, I’m just listening to the new remix of Dogs from Animals. I’ll be getting that on vinyl. I liked the original well enough but this is a much sharper version
