Russian invasion of Ukraine

The news on here does seem to be overwhelming positive at the moment, (although I am a night's sleep behind the thread) so it may be worthwhile not ignoring all other sources just so we don't get too carried away.

That said the progress has been looking amazing.
My head is spinning. Things are moving so quickly that it's impossible to know what is actually happening. Even the Daily Kos is becoming confusing. Today's reports refer to Kupianski but that's already holding my fish and chips.

Just watched BBC coverage. Gob smacked. Reports on the gains, but had a bloke on saying wouldn't be surprised if there's a counter, counter offensive by Russia. So down beat reporting, felt like someone pulling the strings. Very weird. Complete different to what I've been reading on here.
You’ve got to understand that the BBC is a big, international, serious news organisation. They can’t just be broadcasting news because some guy on Twitter said X. Stuff needs to be verified and checked.

It’s why the big news organisations are often later to the party than, for example, a football forum.

Say a false Chinese whisper goes round that Putin has dropped a nuke. Some guy in Ukraine Tweets it and it gets picked up on here - well that‘s one thing. BBC News reporting it, only having to then retract it is a whole other thing.

Ye, I get that they have to verify stuff before reporting, it was just the way they reported that seemed so down beat. Maybe just cos I was so hyped from reading this thread all day and maybe cos I was pissed when I watched it, or a bit of both :)

Don’t forgot the Ukrainian’s already did 1 push At Kharkiv that got to the Russian boarder, the Russians countered that and gained most of that land back.

This does feel very different to that tho but I can understand reporters saying they expect a counter offensive.
That's not what the maps say. Regained land was minimal.

Serious news organisations do not post maps that are two weeks old.

Must admit, I’ve been disappointed in the bbc maps for months.
Big arrows showing ‘pushes’… where ‘nothing’ has happened for months.
cross hatching of territory gained, which makes it impossible to tell as the colours of the cross hatching match the colours of the opposing sides territory.
needs some sort of colour sliding scale of territory (re)gained, to allow date periods (or periods of activity) for the gains, rather than an entire war’s gains shown as one colour.

When I watched it last night, it really did seem that they couldn't be arsed.
'oh Ukraine have made big gains'
Wheel some random bloke on for a bit of balance. 'ah ye but the Russians could counter and we are back to square one, this will drag on'
Now back to the Queen.

For example - someone on here only yesterday shared a clip of a load of Russian tanks abandoned in Kharkiv.

It was actually an old video from Crimea.

I am hopeful for Ukraine too, but we can’t just go around believing stuff because someone said so on Twitter. And the BBC certainly can’t!

I agree they can do better, but this is such a fast moving, complicated situation and the amount of false and misleading information surrounding it is immense.

And, all journos have been stopped from going to the front line so as not to provide information to the Orcs.
There us a news blackout only broken by social media. Whilst we welcome the updates the Ukrane high command dont

To be fair every news reporter in the country probably hasn’t been home, or been to sleep since Thursday Morning. They must be feeling absolutely fucked.

While all this is true, the Beeb has reacted poorly to the counter offensive. Ukraine’s progress was so swift, it made no sense to effectively ignore what was happening on the ground while waiting for confirmation. They should have set up a special rolling report, heavily cautioned with “unconfirmed” notices. The fog of war has heavily blindsided the Beeb’s editors.

The Daily Kos seemed better informed than the BBC.
