Surrey looked to be teetering earlier today at home to Yorkshire, but a lovely century by Pope saw them close on 292-6. That Hampshire collapse could prove costly.

Heard Micky Stewart tell a lovely story on the radio today. He was drawing comparisons between then and now and how clubs today celebrate winning trophies. He recalled how Surrey won the County Championship at Somerset in ‘57 and how he and Ken Barrington, because they were the junior professionals, were responsible for sorting all the kit out and getting it back to the Oval. So, despite having been mainstays, they had to gather everything, bag it up, and carry it all on the train back to London. By the time they got back at night, the Oval was all locked up and everyone had gone, so they just had to haul everything up and over the Hobbs Gates and leave it for the morning. Different times.

Surrey close their first innings on 333 all out. That means they’ve scored 300+ in every first innings in this Championship, home and away.

Playing better at Chelmsford this morning, probably set about 100. I think batting again in the gloom yesterday evening will be fatal.
