Akanji and Grealish getting most of the plaudits today but they were second and third respectively behind Rodri as the best player on the pitch today. Every part of his role was done to an exceptionally high standard even after being weighed down by a yellow he had to take for the team. The level he's now reached with his forward passing has gone up another level over the summer.

Rolls Royce midfielder, he's been our best player this season after Haaland, the transition from Fernandinho to Rodri has been exceptional, good work from Pep and Txiki signing him. Always gives 8/10 performance, never injured and is there in the big games, deserved to play that UCL final but we move on.

Phillips needs to be healthy enough to start some games, or else his acquisition would have been useless.

Indeed, but he has signed on a long contract that he is a month into. Hopefully, our medical team didn't get it completely wrong, and nor did we ignore any information given. I imagine that we have the very best resources available to assist in his recovery.

He's been very good this season but not quite the levels he reached last season which were exceptional.
I don't think that any player has reached the levels that they were at yet, and we cannot judge the new players on that basis.

Disagree, I think he's been significantly better this season on an individual basis. You have to remember last season he struggled a lot more when Bernardo wasn't alongside him doing the leg work. Bernardo has been utilised elsewhere a fair bit so far this season and his absence from the centre hasn't been noticed nearly as much because Rodri has stepped up again.

Rodri was an absolute colussus last season. He also managed to grab 7 PL goals which is pretty exceptional for a CDM.

It's about that frame, and the complete mastery of how to use it to fend off opponents. They're right - it kills pressure. Totally. Passing it about - suddenly you get a string of opponents getting close to the player they're trying to pressure. And then Rodri gets it. And his opponent gets there, and it's useless. Before you know it, the ball is back with an unmarked player - often one the opponent would have been charged with pressing. But he's still stuck behind Rodri's body, trying to figure out a way around this massive, moving obstacle. Oh, wait, the next player has it. Better go close him down... wait... Rodri is STILL in the way. He was thinking about that when he made the first pass. Two steps ahead.

Vital to our side, need to find a way of resting him now Phillips can't be relied on

Nicely said.

There's a stat for Press Resistance - defined as passes made when under pressure.
His numbers are off the scale for 21/22 - Number 1 in the Premier League and Number 1 from Europe's big 5 leagues.

He's so far ahead in the PL it almost beggars belief. Last season - 464 passes made under pressure and the nearest to him was Romeu with 346.

What a player - love the guy.

simply the best DM in the world currently and also gets us as a club and fans? such a down to earth guy and we`ll still have him for 5 plus years which is even better!

He was our player of the season last year in my opinion, ahead of kdb. He had some vital moments to enable us to win the league

Can't believe I read tweets about him being worse than Ged Brannan a few years ago.

Best defensive midfield player in the world. Would not swap him for anyone.

Funny thing is both viewpoints are correct.

He was abysmal enough that he lost his place in the CL final.. (I think what actually sealed his spot being lost was that he gave the ball away at Brighton.. looked at the sky and didn't even backtrack.. and Brighton scored 3 in a row)

But for all the hate he got, he's definitely turned it around and deserves every bit of praise he gets now and then some!

It's a bit like Laporte.. Son is his kryptonite but other than that he's pretty much superman for a left sided centerback and he at the tail end of last season carried us across the line along with Rodri.
