2022 World Cup Discussion

Excellent summary with just one more small annoyance to add. Derek Rae is probably reasonably fluent in a couple of languages, but his over emphasized pronunciation of players names (particularly German/Dutch/Spanish) is just fukin irritating.
Is that the Scottish commentator Derek Rae who used to do commentary for BBC Scotland.

Yes.

Just found this on his wiki … “Rae is fluent in German and dabbles in several other languages. Rae has been known to call consulates to confirm that he has the correct pronunciation of a player's name.[5]”

Got to admire his commitment to getting it right, but it still annoys the fuck out of me.

But, Rae is a lot less annoying than Tommy Smyth and his obtuse references. Thankful we’re not having to listen to him.

If the 78 year old Modric can play for 99 mins plus added time for Croatia in the World Cup knockout stage, the quality and intensity of the teams must be well below that of top flight club games.
As other posters have pointed out, this is Championship football at best.
Just sayin'.

It becomes such a tense occasion at times that there is zero intensity. I always feel England should kick it up a gear, our energy and intensity should be far above the other teams if the premier league is as intense as they say it is. Especially considering it's during the season so they're into peak fitness. But we look pretty pedestrian at times as well. We all thought we'd do Croatia in the semi's last time out because they'd played ET so much but we didn't bother testing their fitness!

I'd imagine Brazil do a better job of exposing any fatigue though.

I fancy Netherlands to put Argentina and then Brazil to the sword

I'm with you on the Argentina game. I think they've got too much pace and movement for the Argentine defence and will outscore them. Not so sure about Brazil though. I think Brazil will make the final, just a shame England will be there to beat them.
