The Dj, music production and synthesiser thread

so been working on a new piece of music since the beginning of the year and pretty damn happy with it. played it live for the first time at a bar in lev last weekend and had a fucking great time, and certainly appears the crowd did too. For anyone interested, this is the set. about half an hour long, put together using a korg minilogue, monologue, opsix, R3, a roland ju-06a and a tr-8s. had a lot of fun writing this:

This is great. What DAW are you using? My son is getting pretty good on guitar. He just bought a stand alone interface to record it so getting into the software side.

Ableton, love it. Really easy to control all your hardware with it and come up with new ideas very quickly. And good luck to your son. I've played bass guitar since i was 14, the synths are relatively new. If you need any advice on hardware/software, happy to offer what advice i can.

I’ve been “producing” for 20+ years and have used quite a few different DAWs…but I started on hardware (samplers, synths, sequencers)….and for me, personally, the best DAW is Logic Pro X….it’s exclusive to Apple, so you’ll need a Mac. But if he using a PC, the probably Ableton or Cubase ….but I think Ableton lends itself to dance/electronic music more

He's using bandlab now as it's free and simple. This stuff is so much better now than what I had a go on in the 90s.

I've got a 15 year old for whom using Cubase is an integral part of his GCSE Music; he uses Ableton with his mates too but then for some reason also uses Reaper for messing about with his guitar loops.

It's all a bit bloody different from the plastic recorders we were given when I was at school!! I try, but fail, to hide my envy :-)

My son just started music GCSE. Are you paying for these apps - I would have thought schools would have some licences that he can use but apparently not.

Cubase which is the eye wateringly expensive one I think, is provided by school. Ableton he's got a student discounted version of the standard Live that we got (one of his mates has the full suite but of dubious provenance I think) and he's nicked my copy of Reaper! I imagine it depends entirely on the school, once upon a time his school was labelled as a technology college and they seem to have managed to keep up a decent focus in software and tech but I think each year it becomes harder.

I hope your son enjoys it, my lad has really enjoyed the performance and collaborative elements but has said he'll be glad if he never hears Killer Queen or Purcell's Music for a While (two of his set pieces for analysis) ever again!

Top work Jon….getting a mix of 80s and 90s influences….S-Express, Justice, and for the life of me I can’t remember who the last track reminds me of….I was at a night a cpl of weeks back that David Holmes was playing, and some of the tunes he played put me in mind of it…..dare I say, a bit Sabres of Paradise??

yeah, happy with the sabres of paradise comparison. in fact the tune i played prior to going on when i played this live was this, daniel avery's tribute to weatherall. thought it would set the mood for what i was about to play quite nicely. ha, and i know exactly which one s-express refers to, the bassline on the second tune. again, happy with that, cheers lad

on a more synth geekery note, the reason it probably sounds quite retro is the setup i'm using. i only use the synths, there's no software effects, and think it gives a really nice stripped down sound. it's too easy to just go throwing a tidal wave of software effects on everything, but think it swamps the sound. i have a lovely reverb pedal, an equally nice delay pedal (the boss RV-500 and the DD-500) and that does all the effects work i need. all good

Do you use a DAW at all? Even to record individual songs tracks?

yes. i use ableton to trigger the synths but i don't use any of the software effects, other than a tiny bit of compression to keep levels in check when playing live. i'm in the process of getting final recordings of each song at the moment, so i'll probably add a little bit of effects, but it will probably mostly be from my effects pedals, as opposed to ableton.
