Hes a shit shot stopper and his distribution has been ropier than normal (although still the best in the world, just is playing lazily and making mistakes)

Crucial to our set-up but works both ways, he looks better in our system as outside of us his shot-stopping would be getting blasted every week

Don't see any replacement out there who could do a better job without spending world record fees which we wouldn't do unless someone is going to offer us something silly for him

You’re bang on. This game wasn’t on him but it’s very unfortunate that we’ve conceded the first shot on target in each of the last four games.

Ederson is rarely at fault for huge blunders but he also rarely pulls us out of the fire.
Now this is the truth of the matter.

I do think his distribution skills have less effect since opponents now rarely press up that high up the pitch. they rather double up on Rodri and leave even defenders allow to make passes and Akanji, Ake, Walker aint too good with forward passing...
3-4 years ago they pressed us high up, and Ederson constantly was involved I think that changed slowly and now that is not having that huge effect his general keeper skills are more visible so to say. and yes in that he is not a world class keeper.

he certainly doesnt give huge confidence to our defenders in a way that if they mess up Ederson will still be there to save us. once our defenders are beaten they know whats coming, a conceded goal.

A very fair appraisal of where we are. Sad that some jump on such observations with anti /hate/agenda crap remarks.

He's crucial to the way Pep plays. He's not the best shot stopper however Pep wants the whole team to defend so we don't concede shots on goal. Yesterday was a collective failure not just Edersons.

The whole team do defend to stop shots. We’ve conceded the fewest shots in the league on our goal.

Opponents will have shots, it’s football. The problem for some, is that you can’t rely on Ederson to pull you out of the mire on these occasions.

The “he’s the best for Pep’s game” narrative is slowly becoming the equivalent of putting your fingers in your ear and yelling ‘blah blah’. How long do you keep saying it, before you realise there’s a problem starting to fester?

The opinion that Ederson does not contribute enough as a goalkeeper himself, is becoming more prevalent and obvious. Clearly, there’s a discussion to be had.

thing is what Pep was used to before City?

Victor Valdes and Neuer.

both of them can do what Ederson in terms of passing imo but they were making saves too when they needed to. Neuer was obviously much better all around. Neuer was saving 1v1 runs for fun at one point. making himself big he managed to get the ball not to go across that many time into the goal. with Ederson its more like a goal conceded or a red card or a pen.

Neuer was crucial for Bayern winning CL both with Heynckes and with Flick. (before Pep arrived to them and after Pep left them.)

that save from Curtois in the semis last year second leg I think vs Grealish shot we need that kind of extra provided from goalkepeers.

Cannot save if his life depends on it. When life is going well and we're winning, coasting through games it's fine, but when times are tough and we need crucial, crucial saves in UCL matches and PL games he falls short unfortunately. He's exceptional in distribution and playing out from the back but when the time comes to actually saving...

Imagine if we had a well-rounded keeper like Alisson who himself is decent playing out from the back but is also so reliable in goal.
