City clubcall?

I used to phone club call a fair bit as well, although I was more of a junkie, especially during the close-season - remember that anyone?? - for the early edition of the MEN, esp pre-Sky/tinterweb days 1985-95... it would arrive at the newsagents at about 1pm and I would anxiously wait news on our latest summer chase for Paul Stewart, or worse, some totally unknown bloke from Iceland or whereever! Being a bit older I very quicky cottoned on to the fact that Clubcall was a total rip-off so soon gave that a wide berth!

Jesus yea me too,mam used to go fucking mental when phone bill came,10 mins and they would tell you something that very rarely happened or came off if it was transfer talk, never off it mind back in the day

In 1987 I listened to a full members cup match Vs Plymouth on clubcall from a pay phone inside a pub in Surrey. I popped 10 pence in and I got the full 90 minutes for some strange reason. Now that was value for money for a city fan working away. The only downside was Brian Clarkes commentary.

I'm sure they used to do a ticket information line as well 10 minutes listening to crap before they actually told you what you needed to know ,but you had to ring it because the oticket office never answered the phone
When we played Brentford in the FA Cup in 1988 I called the Brentford club call from work.
"Welcome.to Brentford FC club call - you can hear all about ticket requirements for the upcoming FA Cup game v Manchester City, but first here is a match report from last night's reserve game at Cambridge United....."
Slammed the phone down lol

6-2, the Tuesday after the 10-1?

There can’t be many football fans who’ve seen 19 goals over two consecutive games in just three days?

There was a bit of a crossover actually. There was a page on Ceefax, can't remember the number, I'm sure some other blues will, that gave you the ClubCall headlines. It was the pre-internet version of the Transfer Forum I suppose! It would give you a headline next to your clubs name with transfer speculation. I always used to check that out, but never phoned up because I'd have been thrown out of the house!

The closest I came to ringing was when we were linked with David Platt. He was England captain at the time and playing for Juventus. There was rumours at the time that he was a boyhood City fan, but that, and seemingly the speculation, turned out to be bollocks!
I used to get the ClubCall number off Ceefax, a bollocking ensued when my mum saw the bill. Looking back, listening to us being linked to Ronaldinho whilst playing in division 1 was probably the time I should have realised this wasn’t really a good use of my time and my mums money.

The week before the 10:1 we also beat Swindon 4:3 didn't win!
Going back to 'club call' I remember phoning from a payphone at a wedding once to find out the City score (can't remember the game or the wedding...though I know it wasn't mine!!)

Didn't win? Didn't we, obviously.

Clubcall, Ceefax (and the ITV version..Oracle??) Add in The Pink Final and football highlights on Sportsnight on a weekday night it really does feel like we've just got out of The Tardis doesn't!
Talking of Sportsnight I hardly ever remember City being on that (maybe I just wasn't allowed to stay up on a school night?)One of the very few times I do remember was a League Cup game at Villa in 76 ,the season after we won it , think we lost that game about 3:0?

I do remember a 4-3 at Swindon. Never realised it was the game before the 10-1 though. Think the one I’m thinking of Jason Beckford scored though, so not sure if that was a different year.

i used to ring it when city was away, if you hit it at the wrong time, it went on with telling you about game before it told you the score, when i was out having a beer and rung up from a telephone box [ young uns ask your dad] it was against QPR away and it cost me loads as it was i think 2-4
