I don‘t mind NI getting the best of both worlds. Good luck to them. Importantly, this establishes the protocol in NI, keeps the GFA in place and hopefully means Stormont will be back and the elected members can do their job.

Just shows what can be done when you have a PM more interested in pragmatic results than fanatical anti-European ideology. Next step is to move the rest of the UK towards alignment with the EU Single Market. After all, if it’s good for NI, it must be good for the rest of us :)

To be fair being in the EU was the easiest way to peace in N.I. It was leaving that jeopardised it.Even with this better deal still may.

Not substantially no. At least as far as I can tell (I may be wrong). There is still a border in the Irish Sea, we have agreed to provide real time customs data, NI is in the EU Single Market and subject to EU rules and ECJ jurisdiction. All of this was deemed ‘unacceptable’ and needed to go. It hasn’t.

Stormont will have the power to decide on EU new rules, but they vote against them and you end up with a land border which no one wants. The trusted trader scheme will be important as that will remove a lot of checks which suits everyone and as long as the EU get to see trade flows in real time so they can monitor how it is working it shouldn’t be a problem.

The principles laid out in the NI protocol haven’t changed, but there are pragmatic steps to make life easier which is in everyone’s interests.
