Newcastle (H) | PL | Post-Match Thread

Strange reading some of the comments here today and people’s different perspectives of the game. I actually thought it was one of the easiest games we’ve played this season. For me, barring the odd moment I thought we looked a touch off the pace but did what we had to do.

Newcastle had a couple of decent spells but nothing sustained and until the free kick at the very end didn’t trouble us. Yes, they fired a couple across the box but I thought we coped well with that. We’re not purring yet by any stretch but that could have been a harder game than it was today.

Good win though and I’d have snapped your hand off for a 2 nil win this morning.

Three points and a clean sheet.
Some fucking weirdos again on the match thread.
All wins are important but when we win on the weekend of the “Two cheeks “ Derby I can now relax knowing At least one of them will fuck up tomorrow.
Love this club
The “we hate City more than you” derby

Kev is in the team purely on his ability to do something "out of nothing", inexplicable mistakes are getting more frequent, haven't a clue why. Both teams made simple errors, all i can think of is the speed of play, the pressing and harassing from both sides was relentless. Some of City's playing out from the back, magic at times, twinkle-toe stuff. The ref was pathetic, every time he ignored blatant deliberate fouls, it opened the way for more of the same....

Can’t have watched the right game, Kev was fucking horrendous.

And has been for a while, sadly.

I keep saying it, he's peaked. Will always conjure up a moment of true brilliance, hopefully as our ultimate, big game player, but all the games of the last couple of years have caught up with him.

We have to use him carefully and hopefully he can recharge his batteries this summer.

Be very hard to replace. Hoping it’s just a blip with him but if it is the beginning of the end then what a pleasure to have seen one of the greats play .

Yep he's not a every 3 days kind of player anymore.

I'd like him to transition into a super sub role where if we need something, he's the spark of the bench for 20 minutes. And get a game every now and then.

Think the best replacement for him is actually Julian Alvarez which allows us to keep our shape but Julian can play the false 9/ false 10/ false 8 and play off of Haaland and link up.

Perrone can probably fill that role too from the glimples we've seen but I don't see Pep trusting him in a title push. Julian however has earned his chance there!

Akanji all over the shop, bailed out by Dias and Ake.

Foden and Grealish great.

De Bruyne and Gundo not.

Rodders looks knackered and Eddie distribution was shit.

Good first half from us, terrible 15 minutes in the second, in control for the remainder.
Ake was my MOM,he's been our best player of the season imo.

Foden now back to the Phil we know

Fuck knows how's Newcastle never scored today we were giving so much shit away at times

Our midfield legs look fucked after 60-65 minutes, decisions need to be made

Kev looked lost today, didnt know where or who to pass it too & it got worse

Eddy, wow his distribution was embarrassing today, its the worst I've seen
2-0 flattered us but it's the time of the year you just have to get over the line, just ask Arsenal.

Phil, Jack & Ake superb

I like your posts mate but if you thought KDB was brilliant in the first half you need specs, or new ones. He was woefully off it.
Thats why he got hauled off. Thought second half against Bristol(after being below par first) the old Kev was back..I was wrong. We need him back, and quick !

Thought at times we played really well....we were moving the ball quicker and more vertically, looking to play earlier passes.
KDB sadly was very poor and I think at present we are a better team without him....I think i saw a stat that he gave the ball away 17 times today...now some of that is down to the type of pass he is trying to make (slide rule - high percentage passes) BUT he aso gave the ball away countless times when he should be making the pass....he seems to have lost a yard at least....is this down to a slight injury he is carrying or could it be the long term downturn of a player where age is catching up with him.....I unfortunately think its the latter.

On the other hand, Foden was excellent Ake was as well.....Akanji despite a few moments seemed to relish the physical battle with Wilson and Haaland is starting to link play more and more....Dias is again showing his leadership qualities....

Bernardo - its noteable how much better we press when he is on the pitch...he is also a goal threat whne played further forward and at present Id be tempted to put him in instead of KDB......

A tough game out of the way and 3 pts.....

Another tough game next week - Palace away is not a great place to be going needing nothing but a win but we are showing signs of fight again.....and ontop of that we are showing signs of playing good football again..
All we can do is keep winning and hopefully someone takes points of Arsenal......

Akanji’s line breaking pass to Gundo in the build up set up Foden’s opener though. Impossible to not have any shaky moments against this physical Newcastle team for 90 mins IMO

I just got in from the game and haven't read any of the thread yet. I really enjoyed the game today. It was nice to play a team that didn't put 10 behind the ball all game and the referee mostly let the game flow.

I thought we were quite comfortable most of the game. They had a spell for about 5 mins, just before we got our second, when they put a bit of pressure on us and created a few chances. Apart from that I thought we were the better team.

Most of the team were really good today. Ederson's kicking was unusually bad. KDB had a few misplaced passes but was still OK. Foden, Ake & Grealish were standouts but I thought Rodri was really solid also.

Good result against a tricky team.

Tough test. Made tougher in the second half by some unbalanced play. Got through it, though. Just. Thought we were going to pay for not getting a second before half-time but, luckily, Newcastle were wasteful and nervy in front of goal. Foden great, Grealish and Haaland good, Ake excellent. Everyone else had mixed performances. Onto the next.
