Newcastle (H) | PL | Post-Match Thread

Good performance against a decent side who came and had a proper go… although they were still wasting their own time at 1-0 down in the first half which was odd behaviour (it was like they forgot they were losing).

So it was funny when we waited time at the end.

But we bossed it when it mattered and took our chances.

3 nailed on bookings all ignored.
I'm all for letting a game flow but when a deliberate foul is made to prevent a goal scoring opportunity (Gundog) and from stopping a break away through good play (Grealish) then it's just wrong.

Newcastle used the shithouse tactics of "just sit down periodically to stop the game" and it worked. Yet when a full speed clash which appeared to be a head injury at first happened he let play go on, then booked Ake!

Some great performances but apart from the obvious that have been mentioned I liked Gundog, and also those goal saving interceptions by Walker!
Dias (what a tackle) and Walker absolutely love that shit and they celebrate stuff like that as if it's a goal, brilliant.

Great win, pity the Arseoles were in a "play to you score situation" but fuck all we can do about that

The shithousery was magnificent and how much did Haaland enjoy it,great to see lads.

As for today, how fucking good was Rodri, I love players that make the game look simple and he does, he has this knack of being in the right place, he uses the ball simply, he rarely loses a tackle and is always available to pass too and when he receives the pass he knows where it is going before he receives it,

Pep worked with the master of that Position, Busquets, one of the best players I have ever seen, Rodri has all his Busquets qualities and more. What a player he is, there is nobody better in the world at what he does, he is that good.

i have no doubt kev can put in a world class performance but we can't rely on him this season, he's awesome when he's on it but so far this season hes been well under par and we can't afford passengers, i know he can score a goal out of nothing like at bristol but we can't rely on that now the seasons at the shit or bust stage, having said that who do we replace him with, wev'e had so many irreplaceble players it's catching up with us now, YAYA, AGUERO, SPANISH DAVE, KOMPANY, FERNANDINHO,
Mate, I seriously doubt KDB will ever perform consistently at the highest level game after game again. Unfortunately, I believe that what we're seeing this season will be the new norm for KDB.

As you've correctly pointed out we've been here before with Yaya, Silva, Aguero, Kompany & Fernandinho. We've never managed to replace like for like. We've replaced with different types of players who have their own top class skill set, so have evolved as a team accordingly.

I'd love to clone all the aforementioned players, but alas it's not a scientific option open to us right now. There'll only ever be one KDB, but there was only one David Silva & we still managed to successfully evolve & move on without him.

As painful as it will be, we're facing similar scenarios now with KDB, Gundog, Mahrez & Walker. )(

I too thought Rodri was brilliant today, he was my MOTM. Yet he’s only got 4% of the votes in the MOTM thread. I thought he was the boss of the game today.

but I believe this will be the new normal for Kevin & we'd better get used to it.
Maybe he just needs a complete summer off and then a proper pre-season. I agree about your physicality comment and he probably should pull out of any fixtures Belgium have after this season finishes.

I got this feeling about KDB that his illness the other week maybe was Covid 19 and its sort of knocked the stuffing out of him, he just was not himself today and looked off it, I don't know the rules anymore over covid 19 and does football and clubs just treat it like everybody else with its just a cold or flu these days,

also when KDB had it last time he was the same for a couple of weeks, out and then found it hard to get his full fitness back,

I sat there today so many times thinking "get rid, get rid" just as he was about to be tackled. Then he rode that tackle, or moved slightly away from it and then passed the ball. Absolute quality all game.

Probably not, so he either plays or we allow him to go. Still think he is too good to let go and has not been as bad as people are making out. He would be in my starting line up every time and I don’t remember us playing well at Spurs when he didn’t play. In fact we were dross. Any team with the top assist maker in the league would be mad to let them go. He is a game changer.

He was getting pelters against Bristol yet all three goals involved him. His surging runs were still there today. It was his final pass that let him down. Haaland was partly to blame for some as his runs were poor today and didn’t leave the pass on. We also didn’t get players up quickly enough. We used to overload players on the break and often score from them. Today we had Kev bursting forward from one of their corners and only Haaland was up. Easy to defend that and it made Kev look the bad guy when he literally had no one to pass too other than a surrounded Haaland.

We have seen the best of him but at his age, that is to be expected. However the rung below is still good enough for us. We also have 3/4 players who have peaked and will only be on the decline from here. Gundogan, Mahrez, Walker Spring to mind.

Huge summer ahead for us this one.
The key to KDB extending his useful career at elite level football is for him to retire from international football & be limited to one full game & a sub appearance per week.

We need to manage our talisman carefully, but would KDB accept such a diminished role at Manchester City?

It all depends on how Kev sees it. Would he rather reduced game time, but still be involved in elite level football, or does he want to be a regular starter so would therefore want a move for that reason?

I suppose we'll all find out soon enough. As you correctly say, this summer & next are gonna be fuckin massive. City, Arsenal, ManUre, Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs & Newcastle can't all play in the CL, & the opposition aren't standing still either.

We have to make squad changes in preparation for departures, rather than relying on 4-5 new players hitting the ground running, after releasing 4-5 seasoned players. I think the amount of changes we made last summer has also contributed to an unpredictable City this season.

Look at Grealish now in comparison to 12 months ago? Think back to Rodri & Cancelo's woes when they first joined? We know it takes a couple of seasons for players to get used to the Guardiola way, which is why I'd prefer replacements for Gundog, KDB, Walker & Mahrez be brought in whilst they're still here. This way they can learn from the best & have a season to bed in.

What is shithousery?
Keep hearing it mentioned and I've no idea what it is.

After a break, KDB can give a couple of top class games before he begins to fall off... Think post World Cup.

However, once that initial spurt of energy is used up, KDB's physical decline takes away that special something that made him one of the world's best players.

This is why he needs to retire from International football & be limited to 1½ games per week.

I think a lot of it will depend on if we win the CL.

Some of those players may think that if they've won it all, they may want to move on.

Kev is one of the world's best midfielders but i do think that another league may suit his game now. Imo all the top clubs; RM, BM, PSG would luv and want him.

Absolutely. This league is incredibly fast. Modric has been superb at Madrid but not sure he would have thrived in this league at that age.
