Nice nearby towns with pubs/restaurants

Hebden is good - see if you can get a hotel in Todmorden or Sowerby Bridge on the same train line
Hebden is a great gaff but absolutely shite for accommodation though
Halifax is actually decent in the daytime/early evening, especially if there’s something decent on in the Piece Hall or the grand old Victoria theatre, but late at night its an utter shithole of inbred brawling Yarksher hillbillies

What’s the name of the mock tudor-looking pub between the crown court and the station? Had a memorable afternoon in there years ago celebrating a ‘not guilty’ verdict, ended up drinking and having a laugh with my brief and a couple of good time Dorises from the jury
The bird in hand ?

Castleton is a good base for walks up Mam Tor or Winnats Pass or the caves and caverns.

Hathersage is the same. You can get up onto Bamford Edge or walk around Ladybower. Loads of pubs, places to eat and hotels round there.

Bakewell is a nice spot, lots of places to eat, not far from Monsal head, Chatsworth.

Buxton is also pleasant, Pavilion gardens, and the Goyt Valley has plenty to explore, with some of the best views around.

Ashbourne has plenty to do and is just up the road from Ilam hall, Dovedale and Carsington Water.

You can't go wrong with any of the above.

Possibly stretching the hour limit but had a really nice weekend in Settle last summer. Only problem is pretty much everywhere there has a 2 night stay minimum.
