Nice nearby towns with pubs/restaurants

That's the "Bird in Hand".
Loved Stafford as a student back in the eighties, the pubs were great but haven’t been back for thirty years! It must have been hell for the locals with all the out of towners. I can remember the Bird in Hand, The Grapes, The Swan, Coach & Horses, Vine Hotel and the one near the river that had live bands (looks closed now, The Tavern, but sure it was called something else) plus more. Then we had Penkridge nearby and a decent dive crawl up near the prison, not to mention the student place near the Bird. Pity about the local beer though, Mitchells & Butlers.

Ah, memories.

I lived in Liverpool for seven months before I came here and spent two in Wavertree. Students made up a significant percentage of the population and you just got used to them. They didn’t really mix with anyone else but were never any trouble.

A few of my drinking buddies were from Bristol, Hull and the North East of all places. It wasn’t just Scousers.

All the pubs you mention are still open except The Tavern which is currently being converted into a restaurant and flats.
There is now a cracking selection of real ale pubs with the Bird in Hand & Shrewsbury Arms both Black Country Ales pubs & The Sun is a Titanic Pub.
Other than that, there are two fantastic micropubs (The Devil's Taproom & The Ship Aground) and a craft beer bar (Candid).
Both the university & army barracks are now out of town in Beaconside so don't really see many students or squaddies in town these days.

Oxton Village and Neston on The Wirral are nice. When I received the all clear last year, my then partner drove us out to a country type pub so we could have lunch. I wanted the day to be so much more than a trip to Clatterbridge Hospital.

I see someone mentioned Holmfirth. I went over there a couple of times but there was only Thai and curry that I saw. You can get that anywhere.

Coffee House still going?

1st anniversary in a couple of weeks so want to book a night away less than an hour from Mcr. Fancied Hebden Bridge but struggling for accommodation in the town itself. Also considered Castleton but not sure there's enough going on there.

Just somewhere with nice views and a few pubs and places to eat.

Cheers
Look at Howarth, West Yorkshire. Very pretty and has the Bronte Museum too.

Has anyone mentioned Duckinfield yet ?

Nope thought not.
went to loads of punk gigs there in the early 80's

Skipton has some decent pubs, notably the Woolly Sheep which serves Taylor's beer. Just down the road is the Tempest Arms at Elslack which does good food - but check its website as it has been undergoing refurbishment. The Fountaine Inn at nearby Linton-in-Craven is good too. There are lots of places to eat in Skipton, but I'm not too keyed up as to which is the best.
