100% Sommer made some great saves in the first leg. We went through a lot more easily than I expected. Professional away performance and if the big man has a pen miss better it was last night rather than in a tight game - incidentally nothing was mentioned of their antics prior to the pen being taken - Neither pen should have been given but hey ho onto the next one. Erling to get past 50 goals this season in the first leg - bank it!

Disagree. First leg is “normally” close. Id rather they played at home first leg with something to lose. That way worst case we come away with a 1 goal deficit which we should be able to overturn and a clear awareness of what we need.

The idea of rolling madrid over in the first leg such that the second leg is a non contest is so wide of the mark.

When they had nothing to lose at home last season they pressured us and made us shit the bed. They dont do that to us at the etihad and they dont do that to us in a first leg either.

Wasn't our best performance, but to suggest Bayern were banging the door down and we were clinging on isn't accurate at all.
 
What did pep do at half time that stopped us getting murdered with peace on the wings? That’s what makes him brilliant. No noticeable changes yet it stopped happening. Stones and gunda dropping a bit deeper maybe? He did something though.

I agree, i would always choose to play a 2nd leg at home, because you know what you need to do.
Even if we are tied or a goal down, which i don't think we will be but still, our crowd will sense we will win because of the way the team is playing and because a big difference this year is that we have Erling!

BM left themselves too much to do but that stadium was loud and they threw everything at us in the beginning and even though we were hanging on, we did well to go in at halftime all square.

Overall, i thought it was a great away performance and RM will not be looking forward to playing us at all!

Results are all that matter in the champions league, Madrid weren’t great for large parts of both legs against City last year. City earned the right to play within themselves last night and contain Bayern, expanding more energy to put another 3 more past them would have been stupid considering the games we have coming up.

Of course. They beat PSG, Chelsea and us with the home leg second last season. Losing in Paris then winning at home. Beating Chelsea away, almost capitulating at home but going through and then losing to us before breaking our hearts. They've also been away and won comfortably at Anfield and now beaten Chelsea home and away.

It is much better to play them away first. Even if we lost 2-0 an early goal and you're right back in it. It's halftime essentially and with the second half in front of your own fans.

What that first paragraph should also do, is remind everyone just how good this Madrid side is. Their CL win last season was staggering, one of the hardest routes to winning the tournament there has been but they did it. You can say Liverpool are shite, but to beat them 5-2 at Anfield is quite something, especially from 2-0 down!

Not sure that's totally correct. The second leg was always going to be awkward with a 3-0 lead. I think being caught in two minds how to play it hindered us. Obviously we wanted to be cautious and not over commit as we led 3-0. By contrast Bayern had nothing to lose so they had to go on all out attack. In the second half we managed the game better but I'll agree we have to be able to hold onto the ball more and take the sting out of the game more convincingly

We're at the sharp end of the
world's best competition and we're going to suffer at some point in games, just like Bayern did at our place. Both penalties were ridiculous, imagine losing to a decision like that, shocking and the rule needs changing.

Madrid are better than Bayern. They are great at game management and have match winners all over. They have that knack of turning games around from nothing too, as we found out to our cost last season. We'll need to be at our best and the Gods with us to prevail.

Yeah last year it was tough, but they had the rub of the green. They could've easily lost to Chelsea, Us and the dippers and they couldn't have complained.
It's funny that they get to play the same teams this season too just a different order, and hopefully it'll end differently for them too.

As for having a tough draw, if we get to the final by beating BM and RM then that's as tough as it gets.

can't understand it. Far too much shit spouted on social media wanting the guy back at the end of the season. i thoroughly hope he never sets foot at the etihad or training ground ever again. Complete wanker.
 
The Sané chance in the 16th minute. Excellent play by Ederson. He starts to come, which is his instinctive move, then sees that John's on Sané enough to bother him, checks his move, goes back a few yards, then comes out again a few yards at exactly the right time, not giving Sané a lot to aim at. There've been definite signs that Ed's getting cannier about his game. Which game was it recently where it was Aké on the opposition player, who seemed initially to be completely free, and Ed did exactly the same thing?

The media will build us up in the hope of us losing.
Bernardo interview after the game was interesting when he said pep has changed the style of play and it’s taken them a while to get used to it.
Being a FOC I never get too carried away.

As a club we have bent over backwards for him, let's not forget his early form was terrible and his attitude even worse.

He ran into form and his standing in football rose accordingly, the club rewarded him with a huge new contract and in return he went MIA and spat his dummy out as soon as things turned against him.

To celebrate your parent club missing a penalty is crass and ignorant, even more so with the score line of his loan club were at.

His attitude and petulance will haunt him long after his career is done, and for me he is already done as a top player.

There are little signs he's learning his trade better. He wasn't a natural keeper, I believe he was a midfield player in his youth. Joe Corrigan was the same, in fact he was so bad we spent £100,000 on Keith McRae, I think a record for a keeper back then. Joe worked hard on his game and became one of the country's best keepers. Hopefully Ederson continues to improve.
