Well, the wheels really did fall off the Queen’s Park wagon as the season closed, with their defence incapable of keeping a clean sheet. Partick Thistle will now face Ayr United, who haven’t been in the top flight sine the 1970s, for the right to slug it out with whoever finishes second bottom. Could it be an all Ayrshire contest?
Imagine Ayr beating Killie in the play off.

Partick v Ayr to see who gets the second bottom SPL club in the final.
Dundee Utd v Ross County the big one today.Kilmarnock v Livi the other big tie.
The Scottish playoffs always seem to be weighted in favour of the side that is incumbent in the higher division, which strikes me as unfair. Would be interested in seeing how many times the side finishing second bottom has then been relegated.

As for today, if Dundee United and Kilmarnock both win, then that might seal Ross County’s fate. In the upper half, if Aberdeen win and Hearts lose at Paisley, then that might seal the European spot as well.

If the fixtures were fixed so that all the teams in the other divisions finished the same time as the Premier league the play offs would be a lot fairer. For some reason we do not do that up here.
TV does not help.We have a meaningless old firm game on tv up here today when it should be Dundee Utd v Ross County on tv.
I believe Rangers are on every week from now until the season ends.So that is four meaningless games until the season ends on tv.
Hibs sneaking up for the other spot in Europe as well.
So we have three teams battling for two of the last European places and none of the games between them will be on tv.

It’s certainly an odd system, though there are others that are even more bewildering. In the Netherland, for example, the playoff system in the second division takes some fathoming. The top two go up automatically, but then the team that finished 16th in the top flight is involved in what is called the Nacompetitie with six other clubs.
  • The club with the best record in the "first period" of the season (after 8 rounds).
  • The club with the best record in the "second period" of the season (rounds 9–16).
  • The club with the best record in the "third period" of the season (rounds 17–24).
  • The club with the best record in the "fourth period" of the season (rounds 25–32).
  • The two remaining spots are filled by the highest-placed clubs that have not already earned automatic promotion or qualified for the Nacompetitie.
That means you could get off to a blistering start in the first eight games, drop like a stone, narrowly avoid relegation, and yet still find yourself in the promotion playoffs!

In Scotland, when they continue to broadcast meaningless fixtures, then that simply reinforces the idea to the ‘watching world’ that the League is meaningless unless you support either of the Old Firm.

A joke that tv is run for the old firm up here.
Always one of them on tv up here.
One of the seasons Hearts v Hibs was the most viewed game on tv and yet they still bend over backwards for the old firm.

Like everything it would appear to be self-perpetuating, which is why I can understand the lack of sympathy they receive when they come unstuck in Europe. There will be seasons where they meet or even surpass their expectations in Europe, of course, but there seem to be more seasons when they don’t, and the inevitable cries of ‘nobody challenges us domestically’ ring increasingly hollow.

Save for the first two seasons when Rangers were reincarnated and returned to the top flight, Celtic have been unable to go unbeaten against their nemesis. Meaningless when the Brasso is only needed in one trophy room, of course, but based on recent seasons the loss today is hardly unexpected.

When I saw the team sheet I knew we were fucked. My brother called the score.

The destination of the Cups would appear to have been dictated by the Old Firm meetings, but the League (Celtic 7 points Rangers 4) has been determined by performances against the remaining teams. Celtic only dropped 4 points while Rangers dropped 12, I think. Rangers’ form improved considerably after the break but the damage was already done.

Should both teams remain stable in terms of their managements, then the League might be a little closer next season.

Van Bronkhorst (sp?) was disastrous for them. Beale seems to have done a good job steadying the ship. Next season could be more of a contest.

Beale's games Vs Celtic have been close, drew with them first game with Celtic equalising in the last couple of mins, then lost by the odd goal in the other games. I might be wrong but I think Celtic have a point more than Rangers in the league since Beale came in. He's doing ok considering he's dealing with a lot of the squad going out of contract in the summer.

Today is what it is. It's always good to beat your rival, and mentally it's good for us to get a win against Celtic this season, but I won't be celebrating this victory while they pick up the 3 trophies this season. It's a bit of a marker, nothing more really.

Disastrous might be a little strong, no? He took them to a European final, no mean feat from a peripheral league, won them the Scottish Cup, and qualified for the CL group stages, though I do acknowledge that his pragmatic style of play was always going to be better suited to cup competitions and less likely to pressure Celtic in the League.

He also lost key players whose replacements have not matched what was expected of them, so I’ll hold off judging van Bronckhorst’s tenure until I see the quality of signings Rangers make this summer and how well Beale then does. It could be that the coach is only part of the problem at Ibrox and that they need to do significantly better in terms of player recruitment.

Looking at Rangers forums last autumn, most of their fans wanted him out. And they'd be more clued up about how their side was performing than I would. His solid start had petered out badly by that time.
