Look at the quality and magnitude of players we’re losing. Gundogan can control the tempo of an entire game himself, same with Bernardo. Rice makes no sense unless Phillips is moving on.

Rice will be playing the John Stones role as its more suited to him with Stones dropping back into a back three I presume.

The Stones role is a midfielder who converts to a CB when we lose possession. It was very similar to what we were doing with a fullback but solved the problem of the fullback having to track all the way back to wide areas on a giveaway.

I don’t really see a scenario where we commonly would play Rice and Stones if we kept the same system as that would have Rice CB and Stones sliding out to RB as a defender. I suppose that probably works ok but we’d probably rather have Stones at CB in the defensive line than Rice

Having said all that last seasons final system may not be how we intend to play
