Don't get me wrong Gillespie was quality... but that summer was the beginning of the end for him. Pietersen took him apart in a 1 dayer before the series started and it never got any better for him.
Deffo I agree pal . The Aussie gypo was Gillespie ;-)

I was going to mention technology. Imagine how many more wickets Warne would have got if he had the ability to review?! Miss him a lot on the coverage actually. Found his insight really interesting and whilst he was clearly Aussie he was far more balanced and likeable than the salty and bitter McGrath, Ponting et al.

I still believe their batting line-up was the main difference between this and that era though. The likes of Gilly coming in at 7 when you think you're in with a sniff and taking the game away from you in an hour. Added to the fact we correctly always thought we were inferior to them for about 20 years.
Yeah good point made there about Warne . Incredible bowler and cricketer, one of a few who had an aura about them . He talked the talk but had the world class ability to back it up . I hold him in the highest regard and will forever :)

I remember Warne on “they think it’s all over” he was asked if the Aussies had any special plans for the upcoming Ashes, he sad yeah, we’re going to turn up.

Bit busy this morning but another Aussie I hold in the highest regard not only for his sportsmanship leadership and world class ability is Steve Waugh . That standing ovation he got at Old Trafford was incredible and deserving an Aussie warrior held in the highest regard by the English. Steve Waugh would have never done what Cummins and the Aussies did at lords last Sunday !!! A man of dignity true respect and sheer guts , one of a kind was Steve Waugh .

Australia are far better than England and they are the world's number 1 test team for a start.
But from what I have seen in the Ashes so far their camp and coaches are far more professional and have plans in place and change things up quickly, Like when they turned to use bouncers and said to England ok you like to play Bazball try hitting this,

But what I like About them is they have a setup and always play a spinner, It never changes, you know they play 3 quicks and a spinner and an allrounder, England has this Idea that the spinner can be a part-time bowler/batter and nothing else. Also, our so-called allrounder is struggling to bowl (Stokes)

Again for the 3rd test, Moeen Ail will play even knowing he's not played much test cricket in 2 years and has finger problems with the red ball,

Don't really 'like' that comment as I hate acknowledging the Aussies are just better. I'm not a cricket expert so know very little about the county scene and only really watch internationals. Even then it's pretty much only when we are playing. I can only assume we don't have any spinners coming through and that's why we aren't playing one? I know Jack is injured but Mo isn't the best anyway. As good as Jimmy and Broad have been (in English conditions) they shouldn't still be getting in the team at/approaching 40 years old. Think it's a sign of a lack of talent coming through and too much white ball cricket taking priority. Jimmy's recent statements sound like the writing is on the wall for him.

Absolute legend mate. If you haven't seen it watch the Warne documentary. Think it's on Amazon Prime. Fierce competitor but wasn't like most Aussies in their derision of everything England. Probably due to the time he spent over here when he was younger. One of my favourite stories was that his parents didn't recognise him after 6 months in England as he'd gained 20kg from beer and pizza.

Says it all that despite all the shit they'd given him over the years the Barmy Army sang to him 'we wish you were English' in 05.

He actually played in the first, third and fifth test match of the series.
Yes I just scrolled through the results of the 2005 ashes series. McGrath played in the 5th test and had figures of 5 - 157 , very unlike him he mustn’t have been 100% and the Aussies desperate ! Takes weeks to recover from ankle ligament injury then he got an elbow injury in his rushed comeback game in the third test then he missed the 4th test .
Edit McGrath 3rd test figures
1st inns 0 - 87
2nd inns 5 - 115

Don't Australia still require their test players to play x amount of Sheffield Shield matches in order to be considered?

England of course gut their country game for months in the middle and best weather of the season to prioritise sloggit and add to the imbalance the wealth between counties, and many of whose test players don't see a red ball outside test matches.

Steve Waugh was a great batsman but an utter **** with it.

Cheerfully talked of the tactic of “mental disintegration” in subjecting the opposition to appalling abuse.

How can you get better at test cricket levels if you are a spin bowler and you don't play ? Reham Ahmeed needs to play in test matches not just in the nets, I would even say play him even if he is shit for a couple of games because that way you can learn and get better, This lad took 5 wickets in a test inning in Pakistan so he can bowl,

I think if the Aussies had somebody like Reham Ahmed he would be playing Knowing how well leg spin have done in the past

The sandpaper team who cheated in at least one series and more than likley two and got off very lightly by lying through their teeth and crying like twats.

Compare their bans with the bans handed out to Butt, Asif and Amir for spot fixing. I'm convinced that if Smith, Warner and Bancroft were not from Austrialia they would have been dealt with much more harshly.

Its amazing how the world class bowlers Cummins, Hazelwood, Lyon and Starc never noticed that the ball had been sandpapered in that SA tour.

Once a cheat always a cheat.

Yep they all knew. Bancroft was the patsy, easily expendable, the rest are still there.

Can’t we just break off diplomatic relations with these cunts?

That accent alone could justify a trade embargo.

Surely they must have had an inkling when they announced the squad yesterday

Might have had an inkling but the squad was announced on Sunday evening. That was lost in the ballyhoo over something or other, I can't remember exactly what...

Surrey reporting that Pope's out for the summer. I wonder if England will put Ali back in at 3?

Possibly. Enables them to stick with four seamers. Not sure they like the extra long tail unless Woakes plays at 8.
Then again if Stokes is able to bowl a marathon spell of short stuff surely he can negate the need for a 4th seamer.
I reckon Lawrence will come in, Ali back at 8 plus Wood and any 2 from Broad, Tongue and Robinson.
