To counter that Lavia is wanted by our direct rivals. Not some middle tier Premier League clubs or Championship teams. Brahim Diaz is now back with Real Madrid first team after a successful loan spell at AC Milan.
I suspect you didn’t read the post. I literally gave you Lavia as the one exception. We will see how Brahim does at RM again. I still don’t think he is good enough for our standards regardless of where he’s playing.

The use of “shiny” is ridiculous, it implies we sign as an extravagance. We sign the players we need. The point you’re making that we sign players who aren’t better than the EDS kids or that don’t improve us has no foot in reality. Furthermore, you can’t argue an Academy kid is “better than” if they haven’t been extensively tested in a competitive level in which we operate. You can’t claim that by looking at how they look against PL2 or Championship sides
Shiny players is chasing players we don't really "need" and want new signings every transfer window.

I did but most of the players that have been discussed here aren't better than we have got or more expensive for what they are. That Japanese player being the latest. I leave this thread as there is plenty of baiting going on.

Hope likely be that Gvardiol is in before we fly out Wed, and those futures of Walker and others are sorted, or on the way to be sorted also this week.
That said players can join whilst on the tour & of course after.

Patience. : )

we are only discussing replacements because certain players may be on the way out, not arguing they should be signed “in addition to”.

I think we will start to see more academy players over the next few years. Have to remember Foden is a generational talent.

Lewis gets some “he’s not good enough” on here but he’s held his own and I think others will.

Bobb/McAtee next year for sure. Do think Palmer goes out on loan.

Also have the transfer policy we saw a lot last summer. Sales with %, buy backs etc. think we will see more of this and if these deals are successful more teams will want our youth players. In 5 years time we might actually see us signing one back and work out better than Angelino did!

No , but you can’t argue that they aren’t. The only ones that can are the coaches that watch them every day. They will be the ones that decide one way or the other.

Depends what the actual hold up is. I doubt it is down to them finding a replacement.
I think it’s clear it’s a difference in valuations. We walked from Rice for the same reason just weeks ago and many others in the past. We probably have an alternative in mind, Colwill or we might not even be able to move Laporte on although I do think he’s done.

Wingers we’ve been linked with, since Pavard wasn’t a new to link to us Peps been a fan for a while we’ve been linked a few times before.

So going by that logic these are the wingers there have been links too which I could find. With Pep apparently being interested in them. With multiple reports

Rafael Leao
Serge Gnabry
Riquelme
Julio Enciso

From them the one player that has had the most links to us last year and this year is Gnabry.

To put it in perspective. For arguments sake, let's say we have 30 players in the academy to choose from.
If each other top level team in Europe have the same number, that is approximately 100 other teams, so 3000 academy players. 1000s more if you look worldwide.
The odds that we produce the player needed with the specific skill set and ability level, and specific opening in the squad, is remote.
Academies are there for selling players to other teams who match the player, and vice-versa.
Sometimes, the pieces fall into place and lots of academy players get to progress at their academy club senior team, but mostly it's a player merry-go-round.
Getting academy players into the 1st team is the exception, NOT the rule.
Anyhoo, carry on with the "academy wishful thinking dream" if that floats yer boat...

But padding the squad with inexpensive players who barely make an impact isn't the better solution either.

No , but you can’t argue that they aren’t. The only ones that can are the coaches that watch them every day. They will be the ones that decide one way or the other.
The coaches haven’t seen them against tough opposition either. I have seen more than a hundred players in my life that were supposed to make it after their Academy and just didn’t pull off the “jump”. It’s an uncertainty

Pep has specifically talked about the issue in the past of how the Academy kids come out unproven as opposed to the “Barcelona B” model he suggested for England, to much criticism.
To look at the Academy as a feeder of the first team is a mistake, absolute false “common sense”. The truth is the majority just aren’t good enough for our standard as proven by what happens when they leave. People here want kids in the first team that leave and are underwhelming in the Championship. The reality is they are in fact there to provide money to the club, as is the case with every club. When exactly do we waste money on signings that don’t improve us instead of using the Academy products? I will grant you one example. We’d have been better off having kept Lavia instead of buying Phillips. But even that takes requires knowing how his last season away went to know. To compete at the place we aim, it is through carefully scouted signings that we improve and win, simple as that. There is a level to be maintained that doesn’t allow for concessions to advertise the Academy in detriment of trophies. If it were up to this forum, last year we would have sold Ake to Chelsea and replaced him with Mbete (and of course never signed Akanji). And won fuck all
McAtee isn't unproven though, is he?

He was very good for a team who won promotion to the Premier League and reached an FA Cup semi-final.

The Championship is miles above the dross that Barcelona B play week in, week out.

So you're argument doesn't really stand up to any real scrutiny.

Ahhh, Gus, having said all that, I've missed your nonsense. Welcome back. ;-)

My argument regarding Barcelona B is to show how Pep sees things, not me. And I wasn’t really talking about McAtee either.
But since you mentioned him, claiming that doing well in the Championship means he is tested to work at our level is insane. The level of the Championship is weak. Look what happened when the run away champions Burnley played us. Sheffield United had one tough game in their FA Cup campaign, against Tottenham, which they won 1-0 with their pants in their hands. Against us he couldn’t play— would have been good for experience.
Do we ever sign Championship players for our first team? Does any big 6 team for that matter?
And we should clarify that it took McAtee a few months to start playing well in the Championship too. It’s natural, not blaming him. Also, have heard from SU fans who like him a lot and wish he’d stay because they don’t think he’s even ready for our bench yet.
Saying all this is to temper expectations. Don’t be shocked if the outcome of our preseason is that he doesn’t stay beyond

after a treble win I wanted a transfer window to shake the opponents big time. for them to think, "wtf they just won the treble and they bring in these 2-3 top class players on top of that??"
Bellingham , Gvardiol, Kovacic would have been that more or less even if we lose Gundo. now Bellingham and Rice out of the picture and we may lose Bernardo too and Maahrez, Walker also being one foot out of the club (but they would have needed replacement soon enough due to their age either way, its just the fact its not the club actively replacing them its them dictating our transfer moves with them wanting to leave or strongly considering it)

certainly looks like the treble win made some player think its a good time to change, I would have preferred it in a way we already bring in the heavy hitter ones and make the right moves before and then tell some player they might need to leave due to that rather than these players decide to leave and we are forced to look around the market.
when we bought Grealish for 100m we still had Sterling around. or we told Nmecha and Kun to make space for Harry Kane...

we still can make it great window out of also a bad one.

get in de Jong or Kimmich, Gvardiol and a talented winger (even if only the Alvarez/Torres mould) and keep Bernardo and try to get as much money for Laporte, Cancelo, Mahrez, Walker. leave Pavard, I dont rate him that much, if we need an extra midfielder Stones can go back to play defender mostly while Gvardiol will eat up lot of the gametime available for defenders.

if Bernardo goes as well that is a big one, he can fill in for Gundo or KDB when out injured or play from right wing he is a jack of all trades and almost a master of all too.
I do think injuries will catch to KDB a lot more, we will see him less and less.
