Benjamin Mendy | Joins Pogon Szczecin (p92)

When you’re a top level sportsman or celebrity it comes with a level of responsibility, especially when you’re representing a club. One of these women he slept with was only 17. We may never know if he used his fame to attract women to return to his home, but my guess is he chose places where women knew rich footballers went to.

His behaviour was unacceptable.
What about the women who were Happy to go back to his home because he was a footballer ? It works BOTH ways...

Yes it does but that’s not my point. I mean would you be happy with a player from your club picking up 17 year old women on a Saturday night then next day representing the club at a CITC event for a girls football team?

Put it this way, if I was about to sign a player and he suddenly declares that he has a huge sexual appetite and likes to bed multiple women in one night, I’m going to give that player a swerve.

City never terminated his contract, just suspended him, as it wasn't within their rights. Due to the length of time it took there was no investigation concluded by MCFC, as his contract ended.

City and the player both lost out, even though I think if he has player in 2021/22 and 2022/23 we may not have won the titles, he was suspended due to unproven accusations so even if he had a year left the club couldn't sack him.

I know we had "legal experts" using clauses from endorsement contracts to say they could terminate his contract of employment, but they were barking up the wrong tree.
I read something about him breaking his bail conditions. Was that not the case? I can't really remember the sequence of events, but I know the club got some criticism for continuing to play him after the allegations (and initial arrest? and being charged for the first time?) so it wasn't like the club just immediately suspended him at the first sign of any accusations.

I wouldn't be thrilled about it, no. But, like it or not, 17 is not illegal. Morally questionable; certainly

That’s the whole thing, he played with fire and got caught out. It could have ended up being a lot worse for him, the jury may have found him guilty or he may have ended up in bed with a minor - even just an accusation would have been a career ender - but he has to live with the consequences.

He did and I’m sure City could well argue that his wages shouldn’t have been paid for the months he spent on remand. Maybe they could even argue he brought the club into disrepute and if that was a condition in his contract, they could legally terminate the contract.

None of us know what his contract says, nor City‘s stance on it. I’d suspect they‘d rather settle quietly with Mendy than create a saga with him. Our MO has always to do things as quietly as possible.

Like he's going to divulge that information

What of being accused of rape and he didn't do it...

Yeah, but there's a lot of due diligence that goes on around players nowadays. It's not just footballing stuff, but also their attitude. However, ultimately, I don't think football teams give a shit about player's attitudes to women, they're more interested in their attitude to training and around the dressing room. You're signing boys and men in their late teens and early 20s. If you had to rule out anyone who was a bit of a pervert, there wouldn't be many left.

They suspended him the moment it went public, but I don't think he had been charged and was just under investigation prior to that.

Breaching bail conditions is not a criminal offence.

Fuckinh hell look at you a paragon of virtue...
I assume you have no other argument but to attack me then.

I’m just saying it as it is. If you want to earn a lot of money as a footballer then you play for a big club and get paid big. That attracts people who want to associate themselves with you, who wouldn’t normally if you were an ordinary joe. Some of these people do not have your best interests at heart, in fact see you as an opportunity.

To avoid getting trapped, you have to be careful, really careful. Mendy clearly wasn’t.

Add in to the mix the modern view of how celebrities are expected to behave. It’s just the way it is, you can have the big bucks, or the hedonistic lifestyle, but rarely both.
