FIFA Women's World Cup 2023

I’m not opposed to the blanket “Player of the Match” terminology, because I think it is in common use with terms like “Player of the Tournament” and “Player of the Year” already.

Man of the Match (MOTM) is just a holdover from the days prior to there bring a vibrant women’s game. It’s the tarring and feathering of anyone who dares utter the phrase “Man of the Match” going forward that needs to be watched closely and swiftly dismissed, especially in the man’s game.

Like most things in life, if you don’t try to force it down people’s throat and just change the terminology, while understanding some people might occasionally revert to old terminology without meaning any offence, then we will all come to embrace the new gender neutrality where both sexes are treated equally by a non-controversial term.

The use of Stewardess to Flight Attendant is a generally accepted gender neutral change and harms no-one and nothing, other than the occasional, innocent reversion to the old term that suddenly elicits faux outrage.

Let’s not create such faux outrage by suggesting “Player of the Match” is any great societal ill, and let’s not crucify anyone who dares utter “Man of the Match” after saying it their whole life!

Councils in England pressed to allow pubs to open early for World Cup final

Is it over yet?
Nearly! Well, the game is nearly over, but the meedya razzmatazz will continue if England win until 'the legacy' is nailed down and at which futures generations marvel. Don't remember great hullabaloo over the men in '66. I think it was a case of Great, and the players got a few gongs, and Kenneth Wolstenholme's words were broadcast in a 1000 different contexts, but I don't recall any 'legacy'! Mind, it did get wheeled out quite often, but I always thought that was 'cos we couldn't replicate the performance of '66 in future competitions.

The irony of all this is women shout man on when being pressed on the ball, they don't shout player on or women on etc. Likewise they will be asked to man mark a player and nobody bats an eyelid. And I speak from experience having been involved in managing / coaching girls / women's teams.

That's not irony. That's just a quicker shout to make when time is important. It's just more practical.

If you can provide a practical reason that calling someone 'Player of the Match' is a problem, then I'd like to hear it.

People are getting upset because of terminology but when it suits them it's ok. I call that irony but let's agree to disagree. Why can't it be women of the match (or lady of the match)? It's women's football, we are called Manchester City Women's Football Club. Why in men's football has it changed to player of the match?

'Player of the Match' can be used in every possible match, men/women/boys/girls/mixed. So why not use it? Why is it a problem?

Why in a men only match, would we need to specify that the best player of the match was a man?

It's all a bit daft really and a load of fuss over nothing. It really doesn't matter if people use the wrong term here or there, I don't actually see anybody really get bothered about it, it happens. Sometimes after my daughter's matches I ask her who got 'Man of the Match' and then correct myself because it sounds daft. Terms change, the world changes too. Some people though just don't like change and see the need to push against it, even when it's over something pretty miniscule.

player of the match is nice and better i believe (in 2023), since some people wants it that way; and it is ok i believe; if everyone will be happy.
there are other serious gender performance related problems(biological male athletes performing in females division etc.)...which are real problems, need to be solved....

first feminists asked for not naming it as ''man of the match''. then they changed it to player of the match. and then they changed also it for men's game :)) i dont know..
the problem is, if trans players (for example if a trans male(biological male)) will perform in men's squad, then she wants to be called as ''women of the match'' in a men's game. and vice versa.. probably there are many biological female players in women football, describing themselves as man....
if you say ''Player of the match'' you will avoid those kind of possible problems in future.
edit: so think it is more about lgbt rights, then feminism or whatever.

Women can call themselves what they want but they should leave men out of it, busy body fuckers ;)

If they win this we will see the first ever female manager of the men's national team. 100 percent that's the plan.

She might not want it!

That said, if that genuinely was the plan, I think it coming down to whether or not we win against Spain shouldn't really come into it. It's one game and shouldn't really make a difference at this point whether she's deemed fit for the job. As an international manager she hasn't failed to get her team to a major tournament final ever. This is her fourth consecutive major tournament final and she's already won two of them.
