As the title says. Based on living in UK, outside of London. Not a dick swinging contest or to say how much you earn.

I'd say I could live off 30k and have an okay life, I've managed it on a lot less. But nowadays I'd say minimum 60k if you want a nice house, take kids to decent activities, and have a couple of holidays a year.

It depends on your outgoings. I get by on my personal pension, but have no outstanding mortgage or debt, don't own a car, don't have kids & I'm not materialistic so only buy stuff when things need replacing.

Totally depends on situation.
If you've got kids, you're going to need more than if not.
If you're paying a mortgage or rent then you'll need more.
If living on your own then you'll need more than if living with someone else.

An absolute minimum is 30k IMO,but als above, far too may variables and individual circumstance to be precise.

The only thing i do know is the price of pretty much everything is now a pisstake.

People on £20k will say £30k

People on £30k will say £40k

People on £40k will say £50k

Etc etc

Most peoples quality of life tends to be uplifted when they get a payrise, and therefore makes a discussion like this difficult.

I've lived off all of the above at various stages, but I didn't have a house when I was on £20k!

There is just simply no correct answer to this question

Im on 65k down here in kent/london

wife doesn't work and 2 kids.

pays for mortgage, bills and a bit of a life. not much more.

This is the same question as how much do I need in my pension to retire. What's a good salary is dependent on your circumstances. What you should be asking is how much disposable income is a good amount per month per person.

As @Tuearts right boot says it also depends if you want to play the game of keeping up with the Joneses, which is a fools errand if you ask me.

Depends on your expenses and responsibilities. If the mortgage is paid off and you don't have kids to feed then 20k is probably decent. Big house 2 cars, wife doesn't work, ex wife wants child support etc etc 4 times that might not be enough

The question is dependant on what you ared doing to earn your salary and your lifestyle/location/outoings/needs.

Obviously £20,000 grand for a high pressure, long hours job as a single earner with a wife and kids is a crap salary. Conversely, a £40,000 salary for a 38hr week with little or zero responsibility, living at home with your parents is a pretty good deal.

Just had a quick look on rightmove, and the cheapest 3 bedroom house for rent in Manchester was 950 a month and says in the advert that it requires a minimum income of 28,500 to pass the affordability checks. Cheapest 2 bed is 775, so that gives you a rough idea. Both unfurnished.

Me and the Mrs run a smallish business and do on average 3 - 4 days a week, I do more when I can as it keeps me out of her hair....We finish mid afternoon, no commute, 60 seconds away, no stress, great staff and very good customers. No mortgage since 2000, kids grown up and buggered off, nothing on tick and everything paid for. Well I say everything paid for, we do have a BTL type mortgage with about £40k to pay off on a holiday rental which we go to most winter weekends. We dont go short, we dont struggle either and dont spend a great deal but I'm sure we could find room for a larger salary but at my age I've stopped taking on the world in the vain hope of winning and spend my time just fucking about doing blokey things. We do this on about £50k between us.;

There are so many factors to take in to consideration as others have pointed out. No matter how much anyone earns they will always say they need more. I am in retirement with no debt, no kids and a wife not keen on spending money. On average I need a take home spend of around £6k per month but I would say around 1/2 of that goes on running/maintain my house which will make it easier to sell when we decide, if ever, to downsize. When ever I look on Rightmove at houses for sale when it shows a monthly payment which has to be paid out of taxed income, for what is an average house, I think Christ how can a family with other commitments afford to buy that.
