Caroline Aherne

She seemed really nice. And funny.
If I remember rightly, the Mrs Merton character was originally a Frank Sidebottom extra on his Piccadilly Radio show he had mid 80s. It was played by a different woman though. Caroline stood in for her one day and the rest is...
I could be totally wrong though.

I think you are correct about where it originated but it was always her character and voice.

Did you ever see the series "Dossa and Joe" Bill ?
Set in Sydney and filmed around 2002.
It seems to have been forgotten about compared to her other stuff, but some good laughs in it when you understood the characters fully.
I first saw Caroline at a Comedy Club in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester called "The Buzz". It must have been 1989'ish. She was playing a character called 'Mitzi Goldberg' who was a Jewish Country & Western singer in a band. It was original and funny but she didn't seem to develop this personage to any great extent ?
'Sister Mary Immaculate', (an Irish Nun), was her breakthrough and hilarious.
I hope new people continue to discover her, a one-off and brilliant with it.
Loved that pub ...another sad loss...... The Southern

This is my recollection too - it was always her. However, something in the back of my mind tells me the character initially had a different name? It’s been a long time though and my Frank Sidebottom tapes have long since been lost, or disintegrated, so I could be wrong.

Think it was the same name different spelling. Originally Mrs Murton.

This is an unaired pilot.

Thought the documentary was outstanding. Very moving and, of course, amusing.

Never watched Mrs Merton when it was first broadcast as there were a lot of chat shows back then and I thought it was a stale format.

What a mistake. Fortunately, there are loads of episodes available on the iPlayer. So can now put that right. Will also be giving The Royle Family a second viewing.

Shame that no-one has written a biography of her. Perhaps someone from her inner circle of friends could put that right.

As long as Peter Hook does not write it.
