Mrs Merton though is hilarious, fantastic character.

I'm not particularly one for mourning celebrities whom I have never met but I must admit to being genuinely saddened by this news.
She was a great writer.
It's as simple as that.
If the Royle Family were written as a stage play, people would have been making comparisons with Beckett and Osborne.
My favourite line of hers is indicative of what was clearly a very generous spirit, insomuch as she was forever sharing her best lines with others...
It was Nana who said it when confronted by the horror of finding out that Anthony's girlfriend was a vegetarian...
"What about wafer thin ham? Could she eat wafer thin ham..?"
