My admittedly limited understanding is contemporaneous Roman records are nowhere near as extensive as we tend to assume and so most arguments from silence tend not to meet the criteria most historians apply. However, you are right this is derail the thread stuff so back on topic...

@threespires, there's a 2 part documentary about Peat and Diesel on bbc iPlayer or via sky. I haven't seen any of it btw, not recommending it as such, just passing on. I'll get round to watching it, hopefully interesting

Thanks. Just checked out the first 10 mins and it looks good. Their bemusement/mild contempt about their increasing popularity in England is quite funny.
 
Welp, I guess this is me doubling-down on Day 2.

I have not checked this submission with the Romans or any archaeologists in the field, but my view is if we don't get a smile/laugh out of some of these, then perhaps we're missing the whole point.
