Kalvin Phillips

FFS! His confidence must be shattered. I hope he has time to get over his first two games, settle & regain his form & fitness.

In the Premier League matches thread I said before he even got on the pitch that putting him on the bench today was probably a bad idea because they started him during the week and he made a fuck up and they conceded from it and then he got dropped to the bench today.

I don't think that's helped in terms of confidence especially. I don't think its good man management to start him in his first game available and then drop him in the second when he has been on the bench for 18 months.

Should've done it the other way around, sub first then start. Otherwise it now looks like he got dropped because of a mistake during the week and that's added pressure for today coming off the bench.

If the West Ham loan doesn't work, and it's hardly been an auspicious start, then a permanent move anywhere in the summer will be extremely unlikely. We then have four more years on his contract to manage....gulp

It looks like that all the stars came together when Bielsa was Leeds manager and he's had one decent season. I can't recall anything about him before then and obviously he's done fuck all since.

Conversely, starting him in his first match might have been seen as a vote of confidence.

To be fair too, the ball he lost was a weak pass, with two players bearing down on him. He's not a Rodri, Foden or Bernardo type who can wriggle out of tight spots.

Fingers crossed he's not too crushed & can recover quickly & prove himself the footballer who was England's player of the tournament in the Euro's.

We have to be realistic. He was crap when we bought him and obviously he hasn’t improved. We have taken a bath with him and we will have to accept it. I don’t understand how we got it so wrong when he was clearly never at our level these days but it happened. I’m hoping we’ve learned from it. I doubt we will move him for cash but we can only hope.

He had 3 good years at Leeds 1 in the championship and 2 in the Premier league, pretty sure he was called up to the England squad before he'd played a game in the Premier league.

With respect, he wasn’t crap, and isn’t crap.
Fair enough, he may not have been at the level you expect, and no doubt we’ll lose money on him, but I’ve seen far worse than him playing for City.
His confidence is shot and every mistake is being highlighted. It doesn’t mean he cannot recover and play well again for another team.

Perhaps I was a little harsh with ‘crap.’ I never thought he was good enough and I don’t think he ever will be. I don’t think he’s good enough for WH either. Time will tell. As for it being a confidence thing, maybe that’s a factor. I’ve watched both games he started for WH and he was pretty poor. The most concerning thing was that he didn’t seem arsed, a real lack of effort. I don’t think he’s at Jamie Pollock or Nigel Cloughs level but not far off when put in context. Just my opinion..

We are going to be lucky to get £40mil in the summer at this rate, hopefully he settles in with a run of games but we can all see why Pep would never start him. Even those who didn't want to accept that.

I’d be surprised if we get anything close to that figure bearing in mind he’s on a decent wage. Can see him going on another long-term next season where hopefully we can at least get most, if not all of his wages covered. Gonna have to take a major financial hit on this one.

As others have said, he seems a nice guy and never kicked up a fuss here despite not playing so genuinely hope he can have a positive end to the season and go to the euros in good form.

There’s a player in there somewhere, just nowhere near the level or standard that we now demand.

He isn't a shit player, far from it. The lad has just had terrible luck.

His injury really set him back and knocked his confidence. Otherwise, I think he'd have gone the same route as many other players we've signed in recent years - Steady enough in their first season playing games off the bench in most games and starting in the early rounds of the domestic cups, and then kicked on a level in his second season as an integral part of the squad.

Never really had that chance, but I wouldn't be totally shocked to see him back with us pre-season.

Terrible luck?

The dude lives a life most can only fantasise about, cruises around in a Roller and is on 170k a week for the next 5 years guaranteed and all for having average talent, jesus wept.

He looks like a man going through the motions, amazed he has hit the jackpot.

You watch him at Leeds and England he thinks quicker quicker with his feet! Seems he thinks the calm and taking a few touches in slow motion is good enough

I meant in terms of his City career.

Many a player of 'average' talent hove gone on to have decent careers at top level clubs.
