Roger Palmer (footballer)
Roger Palmer (born 30 January 1959) is an ex-footballer. He played for Manchester City and Oldham Athletic. He is the all-time leading goal-scorer at Oldham.

Roger was an undemonstrative player, and a quiet and modest man off the field.

Roger's career culminated in a superb run of success for Oldham, including appearances in the League Cup final at Wembley and FA Cup semi-finals. In his testimonial season (1990-1991), Oldham won the then 2nd Division championship and rejoined the elite of English football.

Since his retirement from football, he has been reclusive but he is remembered with fondness in Oldham.

Roger has been living on the Racecourse Estate in Sale, Greater Manchester, since retirement. He played the odd game for local community centre and a couple of Sunday games for local pubs.

The Latics fans demonstrate their reverence for Roger in their chant "Ooooh, Roger Palmer, oooooh, Roger Palmer, ooooh Roger Palmer".

The Latics have attempted several times to contact Roger but to no avail. 'Where is Roger Palmer?' went round Boundary Park several times and still goes today.

on 1 January 2008, the BBC sport website put out an appeal for information on Roger's whereabouts, ahead of the Oldham vs Everton FA Cup Third Round tie. The teams last played in 1990, with Palmer the only player whose whereabouts are unknown. [1],

I liked him as a City player the closest player of the last few years would be someone like Ishmsel Miller, although I do remember that at one point the manager(forget which)wanted ti turn him into a CB!

he used to go out of his way to chat to fans outside maine rd, he allways had a paper with him looking at the horses after training quality guy who loved city

He was a great little player, but much misunderstood. Harry Goodwin was one of our scouts when he played. He told me a story of being sat in the main stand watching a game, and the guy sat next to him saying "That bloody Palmer done nowt again today, he's useless" to which Harry replied "Yeah, he hardly touched the ball other than to score those 3 goals" and that pretty much summed him up, he used to drive managers mad with his style of play, but give him the ball and he would score. Was sold to Oldham as not considered a First Division player and did really well with them in the lower league. Was always great with fans though at both clubs, though maybe a little shy.

I liked Roger Palmer, I'd have kept him and sold Dave Bennett at the time. Palmer was a real poacher, great anticipation of any chances in and around the 6 yard box. Outside the area he could look a lazy sort of player but when he wanted to he could show some skill, I remember a goal he scored against Wolves(?) at Maine Rd, took the ball down with his back to goal about 25 yards out, swivelled and shot it straight into the corner. Quality goal but most of his goals were half-chances in the box, like the classic stoppage-time equaliser at the Swamp.

Normally he was a very calm guy on the pitch but I do remember one occasion when an opponent made a comment to him off the ball - I can only think it was racist because I never saw him react like that again - and Rog caught him with a perfect right hook and the officials missed it completely!

He did a great job for Oldham and of course in typical City fashion he came back to Maine Rd and scored a hat-trick against us.

I know him and his family well. My uncle was in the City youth team at the same time.

The dude who said try the bookies is spot on, lol

Top fella Roger, met him a few times when we used to go to the old Platt Lane training ground. Always willing to sign autographs, never a hassle, I would say he was very well respected by all Blues. Not a bad striker as well.

Wish him well next time you speak too him.
