Pep Guardiola - 2023/24

I keep thinking about the Netflix series and how he's so similar to Penn State wrestling's head coach Cael Sanderson. PSU has won 11 of the last 13 titles and are actually getting stronger and like City it's because of the coach. Both of these guys have revolutionized their sports and left everybody else in the dust. The minute the competition thinks they've figured out their system they change them.

I'm not making any predictions for the run in but I know that there is nobody in the world to set this team up for success than Pep. You see other teams who struggle when they're on the knife's edge but City consistently step up their game in the biggest situations. It's the exact same with Sanderson, his guys might take a loss or two during the season but when it's time for Nationals they ALWAYS outperform their seeds as a team and that's the truest sign of greatness.

We failed to beat Liverpool twice, failed to beat Arsenal twice and failed to beat Madrid twice, when you constantly fail to win the big matches it's on the manager I'm afraid.

That Erling sub was complete bullshit.
He is out of form but his absence let Madrids defence push a bit higher and contain us easier because they were not afraid of anyone in the box.

And taking off both him and Kevin before the pens. Absolute fucking shite game management.

He was let down in the summer window. Crazy we didn’t get the players sorted. Losing Mahrez & Gundy & not replacing was ridiculous

Controlled the game but Madrid allowed us to do that. They came to defend. No different to how 99% of other teams come here so that’s not particularly on Pep.

But taking Haaland and Kev off when the game was so obviously crawling to pens is criminal.

We dominated the game from start to finish. Doku for Grealish was right call. Alvarez for Haaland was too imo.. only questionable ones for me were Kev off before pens and Rodri not taking one after scoring two for Spain vs Brazil recently.

Bernie hasn't got a particularly good shot on him and Kova having his best goalscoring season in a decade with 3 goals aren't really the lads that should be stepping up early.

I think Pep played our weaknesses and not strengths tonight:
Foden on RW
Bernardo alongside Rodri
Akanji inverted fullback.

It was a must to play Kova from the start and prevent that chaotic game running both directions.

It is what it is. Next please.

So hard to call. I'd never have had Walker taking one but he scored against Sevilla...just. Long game and maybe Rodri didn't have it in him.

I'd have kept Haaland on and maybe looked to get Alvarez on and closer to him to feed off the space. But we had the chances to win it and it just didn't happen.

We are clearly still the best team in Europe but would have been nice to have the trophy to prove it again.

At least we have won it now!

Got the tactics alright but will have to shoulder some of the responsibility. Too many players are running on empty because the small squad philosophy needs a rethink and because he's been badly, badly let down by those in charge of recruitment.
