It is well worth watching the video that Zen posted, that shows how easy it is for tyranny to succeed and I fear tyranny is where we are heading.

Thank you, I’ll put Zen’s video on my watch list (I’ve already gotten a bunch of his book recommendations listed). I think you might be right on where it started. A little anecdote that might fit your story…

When I was 12 my very best friend at school was a Muslim whose dad came over from Iraq to get away from the Hussein regime before the first gulf war all kicked off. My friend was born and bred in Stockport and back then I didn’t really know what it even meant to be a Muslim. I knew his dad prayed and they celebrated different festivals but that was the only difference that ever registered with me. His family were affectionate and loving in the same way my family were, I would stay over at his house playing video games and eating pizza. They were just super normal.

When I was about 13/14 Blair took us into Iraq. All of a sudden I found myself protecting my friend from totally unjustified abuse in school. Calls for him to go back to his “own country”, one he’d never even been to given the danger his dad had fled from. It made me angry to see my friend, who was just like me and shared all my interests being treated like that.

A few years later social media came into the frame, first with MySpace, and I would spend my evenings arguing with people on there who held blatantly bigoted perspectives. It only seems to have gotten worse from there.

So maybe there’s your answer. The polarisation occurred when I was 13 and I could see with my own eyes the injustice that results from blaming an entire group as if it were a monolithic entity.
 
You see you should never, ever blame an entire cohort of people for (whatever).
If you do, it's no better than Hitlerism.
To give a salient example, the great majority of Irish people did not support IRA terrorists.
It's equally wicked, by the way, to blame all Jews, including Mr Cohen who lives three doors down, for what the Israeli government is doing in Gaza. Unfortunately, some British people do.
Hell, there are even Tories who are decent people, not fucking Nazis.

I don’t know, being a Tory is a bit more of a choice than those other examples… but Rory Stewart is fine I guess.
 
It’s a dickhead party for absolute dickheads. Class doesn’t come into it because as we well know you can be upper class or lower class and still be a dickhead.
The couple of dickheads defending them on here are testament to that.
It’s no coincidence that they show their dickheadness all over the off topic forum be it Covid, Vaccines, religion or politics and their favourite one of all anything to do with LGBTQ where their frothing becomes uncontrollable.
Basically the worst of the worst in society but will bang on how they are keeping it real.
Thankfully the world is moving on and gradually leaving the sad sacks behind to howl at the moon.

Farage won a seat in Euro elections. They aren’t the same as general elections.

If you actually look at the balance of the EU Parliament, the ratios are pretty much the same, so your turning right theory doesn’t hold much credence.
 
All incumbent governments are being ousted, whether right, centrist or left. 80 seat super majorities turn into 200 in the opposite direction.

There are two factors in play here. The youth want change because they can’t see what their future holds and the elderly want to hoard their wealth and return back to 1960.

The youth vote in the opposite side to the incumbent government and the elderly vote Tory or racist party.
