It's because it happened abroad and it sets a few xenophobic antennae tingling in the media and "the man on the street".

Nobody actually knew the manner in which he died until 4 weeks into the investigation / media scrum.
As mentioned elsewhere, hundreds of young people go missing every year in the UK but their cases don't attract mainstream media attention.
