Note - correct at the time of posting (anyone know where you find updates as medals are awarded, just of those medals?). I put a random population of 2 million in for Olympic Refugees as the population data is not available

What about medals per head without the weighting?

As I believe UK Sport doesn't specify what colour the medal should be.

If you're referring to Thompson I think the working assumption is more that things will go tits up at some point rather than anything being nailed on. Think she's done pretty well overall.
I think she has done very well and guaranteed Silver if she doesn't fall over (or get injured before) in the 800m.

She would have to run or beat her personal best to stand a chance of Gold and after 6 events you are unlikely to do that.

Update on golds per head of population:- (GB now 21st)

Note - correct at the time of posting (anyone know where you find updates as medals are awarded, just of those medals?). I put a random population of 2 million in for Olympic Refugees as the population data is not available

Not to be critical/dismissive of smaller nations picking up a gold, which is incredible really, but I would use that table by not including any nation with 1 gold only. I think there are plenty of global instances in which athletes are born in, e.g., the US, UK etc and represent a mother nation, or are an outlier in terms of ability etc., that 1 does not seem to represent a pattern, which is the point of the table (?)

Again, amazing achievements for small populations.

Also, i wonder if you control for one athlete winning multiple golds? e.g. gold divided by individual winners? and furthermore some sort of economic index as well..... ok, going a bit far.

(i think your table is per million head, yes?)

I think it's a pretty good showing. Us and France have done well. Australia and Netherlands have done exceptional. USA and China about par for the course.

I think that's fair. We've had a good Olympics. We've had a huge number of silver's that were so close to gold and that's prevented it being an exceptional showing. We could have been sat in third in the medal table. Peaty, Richards, Proud, Potter (x2), rowers that got pipped by Dutch, rowers that got pipped by Croatia, Kerr, Hudson-Smith, Clarke.... quite a few opportunities missed there. Then Caudery in the pole vault but I've slagged her off enough already!

The shooter that didn't have one of her hits counted as well.

We've probably left 5 or 6 golds off the board. Probably going to end up with 60 medals which I would have took before the games.

Amazing how those guys (and the ladies, of course) get up that "course" (obstacle? Face?) in the climbing. It's all I can do to climb in and out of the car these days.

It's incredible. I love the Olympics with certain sports that you just can't contemplate even doing. Most of them I watch and can do, just nowhere near as fast/long/far which makes them special. But this one I just can't fathom how they even get off the ground!

What about medals per head without the weighting?

As I believe UK Sport doesn't specify what colour the medal should be.

Yes its per million heads (no data available for EOR 1 bronze of course)

Taking out those countries with less than 2 gold medals we come 9th out of 29 as follows (based on 3 for gold, 2 for silver, 1 for bronze) -

Note not updated for the most recent medals in the last hour

Regarding updating for some measure of GDP data by country I will leave that one with you

Hopeful the cyclists can add a few medals today...Finucane looked pretty tired in the kierin but hopefully has recovered and can take gold in the sprint. The girls in the madison have an excellent chance as well. And Carlin can potentially medal in the men's sprint too - but I think it is likely to be bronze at best.
