Obviously you know him pretty well so I'm happy to take your word for that. Particularly as in my early teens I got to see many of the Coronation Street cast at close quarters.

It was quickly clear that they either played themselves or were totally and utterly different to their on-screen characters. Bill Roache was Ken Barlow and Julie Goodyear was Bet Lynch, whereas Violet Carson and Jean Alexander were completely different to Ena Sharples and Hilda Ogden.
