Sporting CP (A) | CL | Post Match Thread

Pep’s interviews recently remind me of when he went at the team after Spurs in 22/23. He’s trying to get a reaction.

From saying Haaland can get a break during internationals if he needs one to insinuating some players aren’t going through the pain barrier or admitting to getting pissed off at NT injuries and that we pay the wages.

He sounds pissed off. And rightly so.

As I've just told a bunch of giddy rags, when we've been as consistently shit as them over the last 1,2,3,4,5,6 ..... (you get the idea) years then i,ll worry, for now we just have to take it on the chin, we'll come good of that i have no doubt, we just have to ride it out and get behind Pep and the boys.

Embrace the adversity. Most of us have seen it, lived through it and come out the other side better for the experience.
There’s a lot of our fanbase who will never relate to that and have known only good times.
Believe me, it makes you appreciate things much better when things go pear shaped after success.
We are going through it at the moment, on and off the field. The next few months are going to be seismic and it’s probably a good time to rally round and show a bit of support for a group who have made all our dreams come true in the last few years.
My Nephew came round mine to watch the match he's only 11. Losing 3 in a row is something unreal for him, I told him when I was his age I'd be well chuffed if we only lost 3 in a row. Had a good laugh with him but he blagged a pair of Adidas trainers off me. 11 years old and size 10 feet haha.

That loss tonight had nothing to do with the injury list, it was down to the fact we can't put the fucking ball in the net (or even on target), before they scored it should have been 4 or 5-0, and it wasn't like their keeper was having a worldy, he looked dreadful for 30 minutes.
Oh. OK. Might as well pull some more money in then and sell all the injured players.

Didn't deserve to lose that game 4-1, let's be honest. Actually a very good performance first half. Two braindead moments from Gvardiol and Nunes and Haaland's customary penalty miss of the season killed us.

System probably needs to evolve again, but I don't see how with this group of players. Need a signing or two in January.
I believe we are in transition. Lets bring the kids through and as you say a couple of quality buys to include a recognised goal scorer.

Poor Bernardo, I imagine him on the plane back to Manchester reading Camus or Sartre, all those unanswered questions for a little man.

Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva to TNT Sports: "It's disappointing because we're a bit in a dark place right now. Everything looks to be going in the wrong way.

"Even when we are playing well we don't score our chances and we concede too easily. We definitely need to look inside and check what we're not doing well. And we need to get better very quickly otherwise it will be very difficult to come back from these losses.

"It's football. It's difficult to find reasons for what is happening to us. I don't remember in seven-and-a-half seasons this team losing three games in a row. It just looks like this team is going the wrong way now.

"The good thing is even though we have lost these three games we are still in a good position especially in the Premier League. After losing three games we are still in the main competitions fighting for everything. But we need to better, obviously.

"Our injured players need to come back because we need them and it's just not good enough tonight."
Not saying anything different from what we all feel or are saying. Refrshing because most of the time footballers just say the same old boring scripted shite - loads of words while actually saying fuck all. Bernardo has been brutal but honest there. Good to hear. And at least they understand it, they’re not deluded and think everything’s alright.

Sometimes a bad run can teach you some lessons. I’m half glad we got a hammering tonight because sometimes, playing averagely and winning or only just losing papers over cracks and you don’t change things, whereas a hammering can give everyone a massive kick up the backside.

Looking at the BBC report is odd - they say we were well thrashed yet we had 20 shots, 72% possession & 11 corners to 1 - that tells me we still do certain things very well - we just need to find a solution to stopping teams constantly having 3 v 2 on breaks and counters. We gave away 2 stupid pens tonight because we got caught on the wrong side - we need to pick our best 4 fit defenders and start from there.

I guess we will be fine but the game at the weekend has become very important now.

This is where Pep has to earn his big bucks. We have no Rodri for the rest of the season, he has to find a solution to tighten up the defence.

I wouldn't like to go that far with a City player, but you are absolutely spot on ;-)

A terrible signing, on a par with Philips but unfortunately he has to play as we have no one else.

Having said that, he'd be nowhere near the starting 11 Saturday for me
Lol of course you'd say that after his first poor game of the season, you weren't saying that against Bournemouth when he created more chances than anyone were you ? or when he gave the game winning against Saints ? or when he assisted Haaland against West Ham to kill the game off ? and even in this poor game he still created a great chance for Haaland who blasted it miles wide, piss off with that stupid lazy comparaison to Phillips.

Ederson vs pens not including shootouts.

His CL stat is 1 saved/missed vs 11 conceded.

Ironically we played some of our best football this season in the first half.

Great half for Foden and Simpson Pusey impressed although he maybe should have done better for the first goal.

On another night the game would have been out of sight by HT with a hat trick for Haaland.

However :

It’s been said some many times this season…only one of Kova, Gundogan, Bernardo or even De Bruyne in the midfield at the same time…..then we need some legs and physicality….be it Nunes, or one of the youngsters (O’Reilly, Wright)

There have been opportunities, especially last season when Pep could have blooded some of the youngsters in games that were won by about 50 mins….giving them the experience some lack now.

As much as a genius as Pep is….he can be very blinkered and also shows far too much loyalty to some of the old guard.

For all Grealish’s critics….tonight shows exactly why he should be in the team….apart from the control he gives us….compare with Silvinho who can be very careless with the ball and left us vulnerable to the counter attack on numerous occasions…..come on Pep, try Jack in the middle when he comes back….he’s got to be better than the current options.

I think Akanji believes his own hype….watch him for the second goal….no effort to catch or keep up with the scorer….really lazy. He needs Dias next to him to keep his concentration. That score doesn’t happen with Ruben in the side.

We have definitely took our eye off the ball and have suddenly become and look like an aging team, especially where it matters most….the engine room (Midfield) ….probably not helped by having the most players at the Euros.
The midfield are as culpable as the defence for the current frailties and are far too easy to play through.

It’s unbelievable to think that we have a battle on our hands for top four this season….the last three results are a continuation of most of the previous games this season.
I agree with most of your post but not the Bit about SP could have done better. The kid is just 19 years old and we play him in his first game in the CL away at Lisbon! We then compound it by playing this ridiculous high line leaving him 1-1 with a striker who is banging goals in for fun! If you are going to play a kid you play them at LB and Gvardiol plays CB. An absolutely nonsense decision from Pep.
That loss tonight had nothing to do with the injury list, it was down to the fact we can't put the fucking ball in the net (or even on target), before they scored it should have been 4 or 5-0, and it wasn't like their keeper was having a worldy, he looked dreadful for 30 minutes.
other than the 5 goals scored, they had the next best chance. It should have been 1-1 much earlier and if it had have been we probably would have capitulated earlier given what we saw after they did score.

None of our chances before they scored were sitters. We don’t create them anymore.

We played well for a while but at this level a while is not good enough.

Great teams sometimes get their arses kicked.

That’s why we ultimately love football.

The embarrassing state of some of you cunts.

We know this. I think the concern is we've got away with it until Bournemouth and tonight, but we've ridden our luck avoiding it before now.

Rodri got injured and we have got away with it in a few games since. Why we are so poor without him requires a better brain than me but it’s happening…we thought it might.
What would we give for Mahrez even a Sane.
Haaland without Kev is a huge issue.Players getting on.Injuries.
We are every teams big scalp.
Yawn…Most folk on here aren’t stupid and know the problems.
Trust in Pep we must as this isn’t just a blip.Others smell blood. We got problems but Pep will have our answer and if he doesn’t he will be as gutted as we are because he is a blue as big as we are on here.
Don't piss me off with talk of the old days and Frank F%in Clark and how shit we were because those days are yesterday but we do need to put our chests out here as supporters as those players are going to need us Saturday.
