Benjamin Mendy | Joins Pogon Szczecin (p92)

So what?

He was owed money by City. City should have paid it as soon as he was acquitted.
I think you get me wrong.
I feel he should be paid all he is owed. I have previously stated this.

I was just saying he had left/end of contract when acquitted. Therefore no longer on the payroll.
I'm not sure why City felt he wasn't entitled to it. I feel it is just a business thing (and not paying anything unless you have to) with us being part of a business group etc.

We don’t know what his contract said, so it’s hard to take a moral stance on a legal matter.

We can assume it didn't say that the club were entitled to withhold the money as City wouldn't have lost the case today if it did.

Wouldn't surprise me if they were keeping it "safe" in anticipation that they could sue him for breach of contract for conduct issues like Mutu, if he was found guilty and collect losses on the transfer. Had they paid it already, it would have been difficult to ensure he would have had enough money to bring a claim for that.

Exactly! The decision to withhold was based on a relatively low risk strategy that has cost them very little, if anything, especially considering they may have never had to pay it, but would have struggled to recoup it, had he been found guilty.

Seems to owe folk, tax man, and the legal firm he used I would imagine will take up a fair bit of it.

Edit: saw earlier (on here) his lawyer was Nick De Marco. He won't be cheap.
Read on here and elsewhere that’d he’d borrowed some money off the players also.
If he ends up with a couple of million having been skint and in prison I think he’ll be alright, though maybe a little bitter considering what he had before this happened.

I said when the story broke he should win and get what he was owed and look at that he has.

well done to him, hope he can move on start playing football regularly.

I think the fact he owed the state back taxes etc possibly had a bearing but ultimately it’s not his fault if he cannot play due to needing complying with the justice process.
I would have thought a footballer's contract, bearing in mind that a lot of pro-footballers are not the brightest bulb in the box, would have provided for nigh on every eventuality, whether it was a guy's fault or not. Perhaps not!

His career is effectively over at 30, he's got some retirement money now though.
