Feyenoord (H) | CL | Post Match Thread

We were streets ahead of this shit that season
Whilst I agree many of these players are aging and the overall performances are slow sluggish. Teams have caught us that simple term we don’t change or can’t change and adapt

Oddschecker has us 4-1 on to get a playoff place. Sounds about right.
But still 13/5 favourite to get to the final.
Do they know something we don’t. Is that the Tony Barton effect?

For years it was "city won't stop trying to score". It is not that way and hasn't been for 18 months.

I thought we were ok yesterday until the ridiculousness of the last 15 minutes. We actually played some through balls, not nearly as many as we should, but more than most games this season. Gundogan was the primary passer and he was better than he has been all season, but still way too slow.

We just stopped trying to score once we made the subs. I think for a team that has conceded 2 goals in every game this season (or at least it seems that way) to bring on a kid and plop him at centre back just seemed foolish and/or naive.

Pressure forces mistakes, and we invited pressure on once we stopped trying to score.

For all the pile on Gvardiol, who looked fine until Ake went off, Ederson was at fault for all 3 goals in someway or another. The lack of communication with Akanji for the first one, letting the ball between leg and post on the 2nd one, and then the 3rd one oh lord.

You have to laugh sometimes or you will cry/smash something (depending on who you are).

The fact that the team as a whole have come to the end of it's cycle and that the new signings, as young and inexperienced as they are, aren't going to stamp their mark in a team that's had a huge drop off.
100% this ^

Any young player coming into this present side is going to struggle, we have lost the ability to control games and it makes the less experienced guys look far worse than they are.

Nunes and Gundogan were possibly two of our best players last night.

Pep made substitutions at 3-0 up with 15 minutes to go at home to Feyenoord something which we should be seen the game out regardless of who's on the pitch.

The same people would have been pissing and moaning if a player got injured at 3-0 they'd then be saying "Why didn't Pep substitute him ffs".
The subs were made on 69th minute The issue for me was making 3 at the same time Pep will rarely do so and imho it was a huge mistake as following recent form the team collective were getting their mojo back the decision wreck the momentum and upset the balance Pep is usually reluctant to make subs as he doesn't like to do exactly what he did last night

But at least Brentford and Fulham had shown some form before they played us at the Etihad.

Southampton came to us after getting 1 (one) point in 8 games and we struggled to beat them by a single goal that was scored after just 5 minutes. For the other hour and a half of that match we were pathetic.

I said it at the time that we were going to lose more than we won on that showing, even I am shocked at how bad we have actually become.

There's no doubt injuries have disrupted us but it's showing the lack of mentality of some players who are feeling sorry for themselves and hiding behind that excuse. They should be stepping up more. I think Pep is learning some valuable lessons about certain personnel right now.

Not even with 5 mins to go. Where was someone to take charge and just say keep the ball in the corner. Lack of leadership/characters is really worrying - not a quick fix
You can fix that in five mins. Tell them to kill the game. Waste time.
Gundo signing was just shortsighted…….
he was signed as a squad player. Played well last night.

He wanted to make the subs because we were comfortable. I agree with his judgment because we are decimated at the moment but like pep I didn’t see that coming. As fans we back this wonderful team more than ever before because they deserve our backing

Same v Leicester on Boxing Day 21 and we nearly lost a 4-0 nil lead.

The year before the treble we blew a two goal cushion against Real in the semi in the dying minutes.

I was worried when I saw Phil heading off I must admit.

Got tried, got sloppy, got stupid.

Decent amount to like before that though.

I think it's fair to say that the subs changed the momentum of the game in their favour but he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't so yes, I'm not going to call him out too much on it. As you say, he wanted to protect some of the players for the more difficult games ahead.

None of us saw it coming, and Pep in particular didn't as that's the first time in his nearly 1000 games as a manager that his team hasn't closed a game out after going 3 goals up!

I meant we conceded 3 goals in 15 minutes my bad.

Pep has made these types of substitutions on numerous occasions in the past when we are winning by a large scoreline, It's not noticed then as we were once a team that could see the game out with ease as we were the best at game management.

I understand your points of trying to get the players mojo back it's completely understandable, We've been complaining lately of fatigue and injuries and he made the changes because of which looking ahead to Sunday.

Those changes didn't make Gvardiol have a brain fart for the first two goals, That's what changed the game, Not the substitutes.
