Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

What if the times have changed and what worked in 2000 doesn’t work quarter century later?

He’s taught the world not only how to play this way (sweeper keeper, inverted full backs, possession football) but also the antidote (size, speed, strength and the fast break in behind the high line, 3 man defence), without adapting AT ALL…even as the masters have all seen better days and should be playing in the Masters league!
It worked literally last year……

They were all unbelievably shit. In fact, being unbelievably shit is the most believable aspect of our game right now.

WTF do they do in training as I saw no tactic, no structure and no idea what positional pattern we was trying to carry out. Not one of these players you would take in the trenches with you, absolute spineless performance and work rate was on show today.

Why do we need aggression?

To earn the right to play. To not get easily brushed off the ball, or beaten to it. To put the fear of god into opposition attackers who will think they have no time on the ball before getting snapped in two. If you’re shit, or slow, or old, you can still get stuck in. I know it’s the only way I can play.

I think if we lose to Everton & Leicester which is entirely possible then unfortunately I think Pep will fall on his sword. He won’t be sacked but he may either walk or be ‘encouraged’ to move on.

All periods of dominance come up to the end of their cycle and this is it.

I’ll still be there now and in the future but it’s got that end of an era feeling.
Sadly true. A home defeat to Everton might be the final cut.

Villa are a decent side who have given us some good matches in recent years. No shame in a defeat, but the shame is in the manner of the defeat and the context of this terrible run.

Ortega put in a good shift and stopped it from being an absolute twatting.
Grealish showed some fight and had a decent first half but hardly saw the ball in the second.
Foden scored a nice goal.

Nothing to praise in anyone else (although Haaland has my sympathies for having zero service).

We're slow, casual and brittle. And far too easily overrun in midfield.

Same old shite, how a team can control a first half yet look likely to concede at any time and have no chance of scoring is beyond me.

What the fuck happens at half time though because we come out 10 times worse.

This is an out of form Villa yet they should have had 4.

Pep is droppping players because they have been poor but they know they will get a chance within the next couple of games.

Walker and Savinho should be nowhere near coming on yet they were the first 2 subs.
I bet if Nunes wasn't injured he would have started or come on too!

We are losing games too easily without any fight, that is a huge concern.

Honestly can't see why anyone thinks January is going to fix anything

We won't spend and will ride it out till summer
By then we could easily be out of top 4 who’s coming if they aren’t getting champs league… January is key to get two signings for me it would be a cm and a bonifide right back

For those who want Pep to walk or be sacked, answer this please: what will that actually solve? Does anyone think this squad is capable of going again, if only we had a different manager?

We clearly need to rebuild. So instead of just saying he needs to go, tell us who you want instead. And let's measure them up against the best to ever do it.

He's not absolved from blame. At all. But he signed a new deal when everyone was waiting for him to go. He wants to rebuild again. He's earned the right.

By the way, we performed worse at Villa Park last season than we did today. So I'm not exactly surprised by the performance or the result.
