How do we resolve the Brexit mess?

Apart from maybe in times of war we only stopped uncontrolled immigration 120 years ago, to keep out poor Jews.
Do you mean stopped controlled immigration?

Otherwise, that doesn’t make sense to me. Migrants have to get a visa to stay here. Therefore we control immigration.

I see this thread as a gathering of people who want Brexit to be a failure. Nearly everyone who posts on here voted to remain and clearly want brexit it to fail if only to be able to say I told you so. It simply doesn't reflect the populations will at large either at the time of the vote or now.

It could have been implemented more successfully than it has been from an economic point of view. Its fair to say our civil servants and politicians were not equipped to negotiate as its not in their skill set, they had no experience.

But to say it's been a complete failure economically is not true either imo. If thats the case how do you explain the fact some EU countries, including those that were put on a pedestal by many on here as reasons why we should remain. Are now doing worse than the UK economically. Who's to say we would not have been in their situation if we had stayed?

Theres a middle ground some where, but I suspect it's pretty hard to define because of incompetent government policies.
If Brexit was a success, no-one would be posting about its awfulness.

We had very good British negotiators. They were in Brussels negotiating for the EU.

I think a big issue for some EU countries who are now doing worse than the UK is that their govt's are being moved to or run by the Right - France, the Netherlands, Germany ...........

I meant what I wrote. Put another way, we had uncontrolled immigration until 120 years ago.

Good response Brian. Thanks.

I'm wasn't a fan of the last Government, but to be honest I don't recall us returning many people back to France before we left the EU, do you?
We could do so. If we did not, that was the fault of our government, not the EU.

(I think there was at least a convention that we should take 'our share'. I think that was fair. We could have returned any above that, had we been arsed to do it.)

I feel that in the past, our governments have often found the EU a useful scapegoat for their own shortcomings and lack of imagination. It was so easy to say 'We can't do that; the EU won't allow it.' even in cases where it was not the strict truth.

The snag is, there's a lot of stuff you can only do effectively with international cooperation. Rather like it's a lot easier and cheaper to play golf if you're a member of a golf club.

Fair enough. I’ll happily disregard any pre 1900 immigration laws from the discussion as they’re utterly irrelevant.
The 1793 Act regulated immigration after the French Revolution (like I said, apart from war and France was pretty much an enemy).Call it control if you like, and it probably deterred many, including Jewish immigration, but it fell into disuse and was repealed in the 1870s.

Unless you know of other laws.

I refer the right honourable poster to the reply I gave just over an hour ago.

I thought you were being sarcastic....
I recognise the urge to correct things on the internet is strong, but bringing up immigration when it was impossible for most to travel is utterly irrelevant to today.

Still, you pointed out a time where there was uncontrolled immigration.

Dracula would be screwed in this day and age.

He couldn't claim he was at risk of death if sent back.

But Dracula was published in 1897 and the Aliens Act was 1905. There's plenty of study that Dracula was an antisemitic image, and for A-level one study note says "Dracula's entrance into London plays upon late Victorian fears of untrammeled immigration".

Fucking hell Vic, you can’t read a room can you?

Stop being a dick.

So someone posts - jokingly I assume - about Dracula in the context of immigration policy, and then goes off on one when it's pointed out that umpteen academic studies have made a link between Dracula and antisemitism, and fear of foreign influence, and even that Bela Lugosi wore a six-pointed star in the 1931 film.
