It seems incredulous today but during 1963-64 City directors (yes, that’s right!) suggested MCFC & MUFC should merge as Manchester isn’t ‘big enough’ for 2 major teams.

Hey Gary.. I remember this well. It caused quite the furore at the time.

I attach the City board's response to it all in the 'Editorial' column of the match day programme against Swindon in January 1965 (yes, the '8015' one when we lost 1-2 and 'Buzzer' scored for the Robins! and yes times 2, I am a Sad Old Git for still having the programme from being there that day on the Scoreboard in the p*ssing rain with my Old Man and sundry uncles..!)

The board was clearly trying to put it all to bed, judging by the strident tone!

Note the suggestion that the scurrilous rumour was put out by the Press just before our 3rd round cup replay at Shrewsbury! Sounds familiar?!

And, younger Blues also take note, there's a mention of the investment in (for the time) the best floodlights system in the country.. but no sign of any new players being brought in!!

Eeeee, 'appy days!

Michael McIntyre did a gag about this years ago

I was at that show recorded at the Manchester Apollo. My daughter and her friend came over from Leeds where they were at university, having booked tickets for me and the distaff side to come along too.

First time I saw both John Bishop (who wasn't bad that night but then eventually morphed into a parody of a cod-Scouse comedian) and Sarah Millican (who was bloody brilliant!) We sat a few seats away from Dara O'Briain, who was making copious notes throughout! A very enjoyable evening!

The weird thing to think about it, is if it had of happened at that time, the vast majority of us would never have known it any different. The thought of two teams would be the weird thing to think about now.

I’ve always thought it would be a bit boring to live in a one club town though.

About 25 years ago I was explaining to an American that I supported a team called Man City. His response was "Is that a gay club?"
