AKAN
Akanji is Peps choice to fill that gap hence the need for defenders to free him up.
Even if the young defenders touted are physically ready, it would be a tall ask for them to come to a new country and league and play immediately. Akanji and Gvardiol are the only two central defenders that have proven ‘reliable’ this season, and the sheer volume of football has already taken its toll on them. Akanji can indeed step forward, but a dedicated central midfielder would give us much more stability. The signing of two young defenders, to me, is an acknowledgement that three players’ (Stones, Ake, Walker) time may be up.

Until we plug the hole in the centre of our midfield, however, we’ll be shifting just as uncomfortably.
Playing Gvardiol there with Ake at LB would be my preference. That leaves Dias/Khusanov/Stones (if we can get him fit) for CB. Right Back remains a problem though. I still have a feeling this season has something to offer for us yet, even with the title seemingly out of reach. Just a gut feeling :-) In any case, good news is that the rebuild has started at last.

Have to say, I like Frankfurt. The player let them know he wanted to leave and not only that - now and not in the summer. Then by all accounts, Frankfurt were open to the negotiations and approached them positively with a view to a quick resolution. We’ve had some right sagas in the past with certain clubs, but Frankfurt seem pretty chill about it all.

If this guy & Khusanov both hit the ground running I sense our usual new year charge to get the dippers' arses twitching by April :-)
Only if we suitably fix the midfield this window. The fact remains that our midfield is still dreadful. With the signings we’re about to make so far, it’s a 5 or 6 out of 10 window for me, based on where the real issues lie. But get a proper midfielder or two and it then becomes 10/10. Even the midfielder(s) on their own without the other three signings would be an 8/10 window. Really keen to just get these over the line quickly and then hoping for a big push on the midfield. It’s good to still have 3 weeks left to really focus on that one position in the team.

Be a shame for Ake as when he plays he's superb - but we can't keep carrying him for half/three quarters of the season injured

Will have to see which players are here come February 1st, but the investment/interest in much younger players is a significant development. With possible links to the likes of Khusanov, Reis, and Esquivel, as well as the possible return of Doyle in the summer, we could have a crop of youngsters to fill around Dias, Akanji, and Gvardiol. That bodes well for the future defence. Luiz would be a sensible and logical stopgap until June, but given how we have reshaped the attack and appear to be reshaping the defence, I would anticipate major surgery to the midfield this summer. I think it’s also notable that the potential signings are coming out of ‘left field’, so one might expect similar this summer.
