Only problem is that that piece is taken. You don't replace Rodri. You do the rest of the puzzle confident that by the time you have completed the rebuilding you can put in the final piece. Rodri could be back this season. The only fix is a short term deal or a utility player. Is that what you want?

Yet we could find ourselves in the same situation again next season. Rodri is more likely to pick up further injuries or break down with a recurrence, something the club has acknowledged, so even if we assemble more pieces, another absence leaves the same gaping hole. Guardiola admitted it was his responsibility to find a solution, which he has been unable to do with the players at his disposal, so we need to find a permanent solution. I suspect we might muddle through this season but, come the summer, we need to find someone, presumably from outside, who can become his ‘heir’.

Given the emphasis we have seen on youth in this window, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we bring another lesser known youngster in, but this time one who is already entirely comfortable playing in that role.
