SIX… we were leading 6-1 Denis scored all six.
We lost the rearranged fixture 3-1 and Denis scored our goal…
This gave rise to the quiz question “Which player scored 7 goals in an FA Cup tie and still finished on the losing side”

When we sold him to Torino, I’ve heard that City received a washing machine and drier as part of the transfer.

A proper Manchester legend, like Brian Kidd, loved by both sides. Not many we can say that about.

What was Bert doing from the kick-off, clearing with his foot rather than catching the ball?
 
I went to the opening game in the 73/74 season (I think) when City beat Birmingham 3-1.

Vividly remember Rodney Marsh embarrassing the full back and lofting a cross into the box and there was Denis at the far post hovering for what seemed like forever to nod the ball home.

On a side note I am pleased Sky are giving it the coverage it deserves (nothing to do with the United connections - of course), it's such a shame they did not do similar for Skip. I genuinely never saw Skips death mentioned once on Sky Sports news on the yellow ticker tape and I did check regularly across the day.
 
In Fred Ayres' autobiography he tells how he'd started a business selling office furniture, just by showing pics of desks and cabinets to office managers, getting the order then buying the product at a warehouse, then driving it to the office. But he'd no-one to help unload his van - but spotted Denis across the road... So the office manager suddenly had Denis Law carrying the new desk into the office.
 
A lovely lovely man, had many a conversation with him when I was a messenger boy at the express and he wrote a column for the Star. Always had time for you and would always buy you a brew, not bad for a Jock!! Very fond memories of the man and the player for us. R.I.P Denis
 
RIP Denis Law. Wonderful player and an even better human being. Some of his finishing had to be seen to be believed - he could throw some body shapes to connect with a hospital pass and still score the most spectacular volley. Just an incredible player.xx
 
Just wondering will the media show his iconic goal against utd when eulogizing about his career and mention the coincidence that his manager that day passed away earlier in the week??

We're they seen as the bigger draw in the early 60's? Way before my time obviously!

As an Aberdonian this is sad news. Always wondered what it would’ve been like to see him play in an Aberdeen jersey, but sadly didn’t happen. Aberdeen fucked up royally not knowing a player of his talent in their own doorstep and not scouting him. Aberdeen did learn from this and improved their scouting networks generating our success in 1970s and 1980s. Denis always said he regretted not playing for his hometown team.
City fans will always remember him for the back heel goal versus United but for wee boys in Aberdeen in the 1960s (like myself) he was god-like. Aberdeen city gave him the Freedom of the City, so he will always be remembered with our statue of him with one arm raised high as was his typical goal scoring celebration.

It’s one of my all time favourite “Typical City” stats. Also, I think it should serve as a reminder to us all that it wasn’t just that backheel during his second spell that makes him go down in City folklore. His first - albeit brief - spell with us should never be forgotten either. We forked out a British record transfer fee to get him from Huddersfield so he was clearly a highly regarded player long before he rocked up at Old Trafford.

RIP Denis. There aren’t too many legends with both blues and reds but he was definitely one.
