I think Nico Gonzales as the holding midfielder is the most obvious thing in the world, except the fact that we seemingly aren't going for him.

Cambiaso I think will definitely be a City player this year but I can see it not being until the summer. I am convinced we will sogn a midfielder this winter though

Weren't it talks about a short registration window also right before the Club World Cup for the clubs participating?

I`d love Nico mate but maybe he just doesnt fancy it? Cambiaso i reckon happens now to be honest as Juve are spending like drunken sailors on full backs and centre backs? That says to me they are using the cash to do deals from the Cambiaso sale to us as they are skint and wouldnt be buying without a sale going through.

Maybe a Fernando/Mangala situation where we can agree in january to sign him in the summer. Except that he is hopefully good

I can live with that if the the only realistic option is Luiz on loan. I think Luiz will be more than good enough to make his stay permanent, will surprise some people by how good and dynamic he is. But won't play as the deepest 6 long term. Nico as Rodris understudy would be brilliant

Anyhow, I think it is inconceivable that we won't be signing any players from Portugal in the next 12 months. It has always been a hunting ground for us, and now with Viana his relations and knowledge there is likely top notch.

Slightly concerned Diogo Costa will be the Ederson replacement, but only because he is one of those players I have watched a lot and don't personally rate him at all. But he could be very good for all I know

I honestly don’t see us adding anyone else after these 3. Marmoush will allow foden to go central, Bernardo will be used only as a cm option as well and we have kovacic, gundogan, grealish and Lewis who can all play in cm.

The 2cbs also allow akanji to play in midfield if w get really desperate.

Add to the fact you can only add 3 to champs league squad I just don’t see anyone else coming in until summer.

What we have now is likely enough to finish top 4

Irrespective of the speculation regarding the signing of a proven holding midfielder, you might just be on the money here. If the team function as well as they did against Ipswich (albeit not the most challenging of tests), the three likely signings will help to supplement what we already have and represent the start of a longer term rebuild.

I doubt a top 4 finish alone will satisfy Pep or those above him. At the very least they'll want us to finish a strong second which is achievable imo. Challenging the Dippers will rely on us going on a long unbeaten run, beating them in our return PL fixture, & them dropping points, which are all possibilities.

Considering our end of year collapse, pushing the Scousers as close as possible must/will be our aim.

I have doubts about our ability to make top 4 with Gundo Kova and Bernardo as our midfield.
They’ve done something with the defence and attack, they can surely do something with the midfield that doesn’t involve buying expensive overrated players from the Prem (Nunes and Philips.

It’s certainly a risky strategy. Buy young unproven defenders, throw them in at the deep end because you are relying on an injury prone Akanji/Stones to play CDM.

Any combination of Kova, Gundo and Bernardo is poor. I don’t agree with you on the top 4 bit, I don’t know where that confidence has come from
