Blue Moon Playlist Review Club - Season 2 - Episode 32 - threespires - Could have been a Contender (pg 472)

Line-ups have changed over the years, but the gypsy kings probably deserve at least a mention.

Thanks, but I just started thinking about ideas (no songs yet) and will probably be preoccupied, so mainly noting this time probably isn't the best for me to go. Hopefully will have it worked out later on.
@Coatigan, I've been able to finally work out the remaining songs to my playlist theme, so I'm good to go 27 Jan unless you have someone else ready to go.

It's never stopped any other bugger! Go for it.
Sorry, had to take a break and get another heaping helping of Megadeth in. I don't think they will qualify here, so onto something completely different.

I'll keep this close to home, not to some of your homes near/in Manchester, but my childhood one just outside of Philadelphia, "where they're calling from".

The brothers Aaron and Michael Weiss recently decided to retire their band after 21 years performing, and what a run they had in the alternative/indie/emo genre. I was fortunate to see them from the front row on their final tour in 2022, and they were everything as advertised.

I've floated a few of their tracks here prior, but I'll go with the one I heard first from them on their 2006 Brother, Sister album that remains my favourite of theirs. This one not just has Aaron on guitar and lead/spoken vocals as is usual, but the whole band and brother and drummer Michael is heard on backing harmonies and vocals here toward the end.

"In A Sweater Poorly Knit" - mewithoutYou

If I come without a thing, then I come with all I need

Van Zant: "Show Me".

Singing brothers Donnie and Johnny. Siblings of the late great Ronnie.

Can't find the Brother to Brother album on Spotify so if you can point me at the song great or otherwise nominate another track?

Looking at the list it seems like we've steered away from all the family big beasts.

Amongst other things I've learnt via this theme...
  • My 17 year old is very familiar with the back catalogue of The Jesus and Mary Chain
  • There's more bands with two pairs of siblings than I thought but I suppose when you think about it, it's not that strange really
  • Family loyalty only goes so far - HAIM were originally a 5 piece with their parents until they cut mum and dad loose, brutal
  • The reason Tegan and Sara look quite similar is they are identical twins - yes I am that f**king thick
If there's no more nominations, I'll close the list later this afternoon after I've added the aforementioned Sunshine on Leith.

IMO the chorus of Sunshine on Leith is one the best unvarnished and simple declarations of love in pop music.
Comparable in simplicity I guess to Lucio Dalla's Caruso chorus. But it is the odd rarity of it that makes it.

There is a probably a good theme in that, powerful proclamations of love.

Lyrically yes but there's something quite lachrymose about Caruso, it's got that archetypal Neapolitan song feel to it whereas Sunshine on Leith has an almost hymnal feel about it.

Yes, agreed it probably would be a really good theme.

Family Affair

I really enjoyed this playlist from @threespires, with the initial five all being very good.

Pick of the Bunch: "Persausion" - Richard Thompson and Teddy Thompson

I've already gone on about how much I love this song on the Album Club thread. Originally written as an instrumental for a soundtrack by Thompson, lyrics were added by Tim Finn and the song first appeared on Finn's Before and After album in 1993. This version, Thompson performing with his son, Teddy, was released in 2001.

I loved the funky bass on "Thank You", the Hammond on "Whipping Post", and the referencing of famous country singers on "Emmylou".

"Time Spent in Los Angeles" is a great song by Dawes that I was already familiar with.

Songs new to me that I enjoyed:

"Calendars & Clocks" - The Coral
"N.I.T.A" - Young Marble Giants
"Believer/Pretender" - Sons of Bill
"Strawberry Letter 23" - The Brothers Johnson
"I And Love and You" - The Avett Brothers
"In A Sweater Poorly Knit" - mewithoutYou
"Sunshine on Leith" - The Proclaimers

I honestly can't remember whether I've heard the Van Halen and Blue Oyster Cult tracks before but I enjoyed them all the same.

I'm glad you enjoyed this one the second time around as I do see you didn't mention it when first nominated on the Dynamic Duos.

Too much Big & Rich on the mind at the time, perhaps? ;-)

Wow, surprised, but not surprised given the genre and audience. ;-)
