PSG (A) | CL | Post Match Thread

Well done for going, hope you at least get to enjoy a bit of Paris.

I just watched the PSG-City match on replay - utterly speechless with what I saw. Genuinely not trying to be cute here but Im moved to comment as I was gobsmacked, I just couldn't believe what I saw, that wasn't a City team and it seemed they were just trying to counter instead of controlling midfield like they usually try to do.

The good news is I'm sure they can't be as bad again, surely someone at the club is going to give them a rocket.
You beat them at a cantor, we haven’t learned anything from our total arse collapse in Lisbon

My view - tonight was evidence of just how for away from the top we truly are. If we beat Brugges, eventually we'll come up against a decent team again, and without massive changes - and a new midfielder of top quality - we'll get exposed for the bunch of has-beens we are. We're missing - from the recent past - Rodri, Walker, Stones, Dias, Alvarez, KDB, Foden, Bernardo, Ake, Grealish, Ederson and Gundo. Their present day equivalents are a shadow of what they once were. Lewis is lightweight and not good enough without a great team alongside him. Are any of the other youngsters good enough - we don't know, because they barely get a look-in!

The manager has to carry the can for this state of affairs.

Sorry guys; we can get behind the boys as much as we want but this is going to keep happening against any half-decent team. We've just spent £50M on 2 very young defenders when the priority is someone to knit that midfield together, now! We've been asleep at the wheel.

I've been Pep's biggest cheer leader but - after the way he's persevered with Gundo, amongst others - not anymore. It's criminal seeing us fall like we are doing. Gundo is always the 1st/only sub to come on for Kova; Gundo shouldn't be in the fuckin' squad against any half-decent team - great against the might of Ipswich, of course - they were absolutely shit (I was there). Can this be denied? I'm 66 and if Pep had brought me on tonight, I'd have given the team the same mobility as Gundo.

What was the point of the Stones substitution at that exact time tonight? We had a set-piece to defend, and his failure to head the ball immediately after coming on resulted in Ederson's shit goalkeeping - getting beaten at his near post - again. Amateur management; amateur defending; amateur goalkeeping. Piss poor.

Rinse and repeat for the whole of the season?

Has anyone noticed the emperor's new clothes?

Only City could do this to me; from the highs to the lows! Still, it's Paris and not York away..... yet.
Great, innit!?!?

Even the most fervent of Guardiola supporters must accept that Guardiola is now becoming the issue

His inability or refusal to change his tactics or playing style to better reflect the teams ability is now an issue. we can spend 300m this transfer window but if we continue to play the same style of football we will be no better off

Football is cyclic no team or manager continues in perpetuity

What on earth was Nunes doing when trying to nick the ball ahead of Barcola for PSG's first goal?

It was such a ridiculously high-risk decision, considering the name of the game in that immediate aftermath of establishing our 2-0 lead was to take absolutely zero risks which could give PSG encouragement.
It's called having a brain.

This is Pep’s biggest ever challenge, can he rebuild this team? I’ll be honest , i doubt it , we just won’t see another dominance like we have just witnessed , I’d take Enrique tomorrow as manager , fast , explosive , dynamic football , has to be our next manager. I just hope Pep isn’t staying here for sentimental reasons, let’s be honest here , this team is finished.
I don't think it's that dramatic. I would still trust Pep but whoever manages recruitment has gambled and lost. The good news is there isn't a stand out team in world football so I think anyone that's well managed could be very successful for a few years yet

If we continue this shite form and dire performances until the end of the season I think Pep will be off. Probably stressed to fuck with all his off field shit at the minute which won't be helping with his head. It's a mystery when we come up against good opposition we simply crumble and get run ragged. Chelsea will be the same on Saturday, Liverpool soon, Arsenal soon, it could get really messy quickly
Pep n the interview after looking like he had a dodgy eye. Maybe he met up with ex in Paris

Fernandinho was 36. There's a difference
The similarities are more relevant. He was someone the managed asked to play out of position. The manager thought he was the best option.

Who would be the better choice given what we have available? Unfortunately the squad is short of anyone in form or fit enough to play at right back. I presume Pep went to the next best available in his mind.

After Dias went off our defensive back 5 looked the most vulnerable I’ve seen for many years. But that isn’t news to anyone here.
But the real worry for me is how easily we were outfought in midfield.
Players that have been my heroes for years were second best in almost every instance.
It’s going to be a tough time ahead I fear.
People say rebuild, but that is a much easier thing to say than to actually do. Just look at United arsenal and Liverpool - all struggled to rebuild.
But anyway, we have a big challenge ahead and I’m not going anywhere so bring it on.

If we were actually playing Pep football you would have a fair point, the reason we are in this position is because they're not playing Pep football.

That defeat tonight, although really really shite, probably makes not a lot of difference

Even if we’d won we’d probably still have to beat Brugge

Flick came in after Xavi and said to Laporta he is gonna play high tempo game, lots of running, pressing, bit if crazy football etc.
first thing he did is get rid of Gundogan knowing he expects to play a lot for them given Xavi used him a lot but doesnt have the legs to do it.

we on the other hand who didnt want to give him a 3 year contract a year before that happily asked him back and thought OK midfield is sorted.
thinking in our slow midfield he will be great.

lesson here we need to evolve, we need to be quick, really quick, high workrate thats where football is headed now next good few years. we used to be like that dont forget.
CL is the elite tournament with best teams and we have been found out in almost all games except Bratislava lol.

the speed of some teams playing and by that putting opponents under tremendous pressure like Liverpool, Barca, Atletico, Leverkusen is about two levels above that PSG shown us and we couldnt handle PSG either.

this is what costing Arsenal too, Arteta tried to be more safety first, strong defence, dark arts, rather than crazy amount of pressing and running.

for Pep its all about the control of the ball, but no way to control it with our fitness and old players when pressed off the ball and turned over on repeat. add in the mediocre recruitment of not good enough players replacing high performers.

losing possession upfront he used to go crazy at a player for that. Sterling, Mahrez were all bolloxed for that. these days we lose balls everywhere not just upfront and not even tracking back after it.

the ball Kovacic lost trying to dribble out from deep and concede from it after tonight. many more examples across the whole pitch. but what we do out possession is even worse.

we need to evolve from slowing down over last season. somehow we won the title last season but our play wasnt as great overall.

young blood needed, high energy needed, top on the ball quality needed but most of all mentality to work just as hard as the opponent out of possession as thats gone big time. and that even can cost us CL next season which can cost us targets to rebuild.

He needs a re think. Surely he can see that what he's serving up every week isn't working. Even the games we win, we are still easy to play against.

I don't know what he sees in training.

I think it's time to put the old guard out to pasture and concentrate on promoting our youth lads. They can't do any worse.

Chuck them straight in. You never know. It might work.

His tactics have well and truly been found out this season.

All a team has to do is press like mad. Smother us when we have the ball in our own half. They know we aren't going to lump it forward. Or sit back and pounce 30 yards from goal and jog past our midfield who will be ambling around like they walking the dog.

I can stomach not winning trophies every season. But to see how far we've fallen this is unfathomable.
