New CL Format Thoughts

Stuttgart and PSG would go through with a draw, looks set up for a gentlemans agreement that game...
Mathematically correct but I think they'll both go for it hoping to finish as high as possible with potentially getting the second leg qualifier at home.

Teams below us who can catch us

Bologna – 3 points behind us - playing Sporting away, who are two points above us. Bologna would need an 8-goal swing to go above us, but we’d be out anyway.

Shakhtar Donestk – 1 point behind us – playing away at Dortmund who are in the play-offs but could still make the top 8. If they finish above us, we haven’t won and are out anyway.

Dinamo Zagreb – level on points with us but 10 goals behind us – playing at home to AC Milan who are 6th but need at least a point and probably a win to stay in top 8. If we win, Zagreb aren’t going above us. If we won 1-0, they’d need to beat AC Milan by 12 in the San Siro.

Teams above us who we can catch - assuming we win

Vfb Stuttgart – 2 points above but inferior goal difference us so need a win against PSG in Germany to stay above us because our goal difference is better.

PSG – two points above us and level on goal difference. Away at Vfb Stuttgart. A draw here would put us above them both if we win, otherwise we will go above the loser.

Sporting – 2 points above us and inferior goal difference to us. At home to Bologna but if they draw, we’ll go ahead of them on goal difference.

Benfica – two points above us and level on goal difference. Away to Juventus who need to win to stand any chance of the top 8. Benfica draw or lose – we go above them with a win.

Club Bruges – 3 points above us but with an inferior goal difference. Beat them to go above them.

PSV Eindhoven – 3 points above us and one goal better off. At home to Liverpool who have already qualified but need a draw to claim top spot.

A win guarantees us a play-off spot and we will move up anywhere between 2 places and 6. We’d then finish between 19th and 23rd.

I was thinking last night that if it were the old group's stage We would have been out long ago with the fall-off from this squad and team, This new system gives you a hell of a chance to scrape through, City could finish in the last place of the playoff-teams and still win the whole thing,

From the idea of 2 more games in the league table to 2 more playoff games is 4 more games than last season, Also, it gives you a transfer window to add more players if you get into the knockouts,

So if City gets in the knockouts by a playoff game I would say the new system has favoured us in a big way
We probably would have gone through possibly only second in the group.

We’d have still beaten the pot 4 team home and away, the 3rd seeds at least at home and probably away.

That would give us 9-12 points.

We’ve had an unbelievably tough draw. PSG and Juve away are tough for any team.

we 100% would have been out by now if we had PSG-s draw...

fucking hell Arsenal, Bayern, Atletico I rate that much harder than our Juventus, Inter, Sporting line

Not sure on that ?
The pot 2 and 3 seeds would have been very good clubs from Spain Germany and Italy

I didn’t mention results against the pot 2 team.

A win at home to the 3rd seeds and winning home and away against pot 4 almost guaranteed qualification in the past.

But you're basing that on last season's form,
I don't think we would have won any away legs even against the 3rd or 4th seeded club in the form we were in the beginning of the Champions League. I don't even think we would have finished in a Europa League place in the group

8 points from 7 games is all we have won in the new format, So if you base it on 6 games in the old group format It would be around 5 to 6 points and the top 2 teams would be at around 12 to 15 points and 3rd place on 7 to 9

If we finish between 19th - 22nd we can't play whoever finishes 1st or 2nd until the Semi Final. If we Finish 21st or 22nd we also avoid anyone from the Top 4 until the Quarter Final.

We beat Prague and Bratislava comfortably.

Pep playing 4D chess getting beat to get an easier draw. Genius.

dot forget we got Juventus and Brugge from Pot 2 on pure luck this year while that pot had clubs like Arsenal, Atletico, Leverkusen (all of them in a title race in their country) not sure about what others think but these three lot stronger than Juventus and Brugge (Juventus almost 15 points off the top in Serie A)

next year we might very well avoid being lucky and have a harder set opponents. unless we play in Europa league.

also lucky to get two cannon fodders from Pot 4 where could have got the likes of Villa, Stuttgart, Monaco who would have all caused us problems instead of Bratislava and Prague.

Ok City would have finished 3rd in the group and in the Europa League but still out of the Champions League
We’d have beaten them at home and we also beat Prague at home.

9 points with 3 more games to have been played.

It’s hypothetical, but there would have been a 99% chance we’d have qualified using last season’s format. (Unless we’d been drawn the very hardest group)
