Goal was on him, I don't know why so many people are trying to blame Akanji and/or Nunes, that seems so strange to me. It's okay. Players make mistakes.

But it really doesn't matter. It was a mental mistake and not a lack of ability that led to the goal, those can be corrected and are completely understandable from a 20 year old who doesn't speak English and has barely even been with the team.

It's all about how he kicks on and fair play to him, he didn't crumble. The future is bright for him.

Goal started with no options for the throw which ended up straight at the feet of a Chelsea player who instead of controlling it just hoofed it forward. Jackson and Khushanov both missed the header but IMO Manu came sweeping around and should have taken control of the situation. He didn’t and we know the rest. And despite what the media said Manu spoke him, as did Bernardo and I think Gundo. Next time ball was dead Ederson spoke to him and was seen to gesticulate him to keep his chin up. He then got booked but then grew in confidence. He is 20, so compare him to the likes of Harwood Bellis who we let go, who is now 22 and has played 150+ senior games compared with just 60. I know who I would prefer.

If you go back to the basic standards of defending (Sunday League in '80s on Hough End), Akanji should have strode forward and hoofed the ball upfield or into the stand.
Unfortunately, Akanji seemed to delay and the young lad tried to rectify his missing the header.
He will learn and great to see how his team mates rallied around.
Very important he played that extra 9 minutes of the second half, to emphasise Pep's faith and support...

I think it helped that the captain on the field was Bernardo and he talked to him and calmed him down - they must speak french.

And the crowd also rallied behind him to the ire of the half time instant footy experts who came at him with all sorts of knives.

Confirms what we knew they always had an agenda!

BTW have to hand it to the lad.. he didn't wilt or give one inch and he was physical when he needed to be. Got some good blocks in vs their shots too.

Think he needs to be paired up with Dias or Ake and then we will have a solid back 2!
Also Busted a gut to get back on any chelsea break. Didnt quit on any play. Great attitude.

Just rewatched the goal for Chelsea.
Love Akanji and understand he's struggling this season, but the seasoned pro needed to help the youngster out and just clear things up
The fuck up was all khusanov. He had control of the situation and made an error. He’ll learn.

Whos to say if Akanji tries to clear it, khusanov and he collide and Jackson gets the ball anyway?

The lad fucked up. Awful start from which he could have completely hidden, but he didn’t. His attitude was great and he probably blocked a goal not long after.

I don't like the overcorrection people have made on the reaction to Khusanov. He's made a huge mistake, don't hide it. Don't baby him. He's a grown adult that was just purchased for a huge sum and is receiving a lot of money to play for the best team in the land. Mistakes are unacceptable. He knows it. The solution isn't to tell pep "why did you play him" and to hide him somewhere until he magically improves. The solution is to play him again and tell him not to do that again. 20 year old or not, doesn't speak the language or not, I am not prepared to lower the expectations I have for him. If he's not good enough right now we shouldn't have paid this amount. I believe he is good enough and so he should know better.

Likewise, he really wasn't anything good after the mistake, I don't understand why people are trying to paint the rest of his performance like it was great. Again, stop lowering the expectations. Raise them instead. He is better than what he's shown.

I think Akanji could have taken control of the situation and cleared the ball but you had two players who cannot communicate and have never played together.

Important thing is Kodir showed real cojones to get his shit together and play well after a difficult start.
He left it for khusanov who made the really poor decision to try head it back to the keeper. Akanji is not at fault, even look at Akanjis reaction to when he tried to head it, he was like "what the heck are you doing?!" Nobody could have predicted that. Stop trying to cover for him, acknowledge it. Blaming Akanji for that is a terrible take.

Akanji is our new Nunes. At fault for everything.
We will see him against Arsenal again since I doubt that Stones will play full 90.

I think it’s ok to blame Khusonov here but to act like a bad first 5 minutes in his debut as a 20 yr old is his definition as a player is ridiculous. He misplaced passes but was not horrible after the yellow card. Made a few nice plays too. Cut the kid some slack and let’s get behind him his next performance. Some of you people…man.

Going off Peps comments about Stones , I think he plays again this weekend against Arsenal

We then have a week off so we should be able to reset and hopefully get Ake and Dias back

I think we saw enough to suggest that it’s worth keep throwing him in rather than keep rushing players back ?

FFS you never learn, what a sh1t statement.

A 20 year old, does not know the language, not trained with his teammates and thrown into the lion's den.

Yes it was a bad mistake but what a recovery, far more experienced players would have completely lost their shit after that start, he battled through, and look at his challenge on Jackson, putting the player on his arse, winning the ball and moving it on, a moment where he showed just why we have invested in his potential.

Why do you keep suggesting we paid a big fee for him? Why do I have to keep making the point over and over again that £35m gets you a midtable player at best now because it's not 2010? It's like talking to an 80 year old bloke in the pub who is incensed that "those players get £100k a week each now! it's outrageous!". No Grandad, you're living in a different decade from the rest of us.

Last season we bought a 20 year old defender who was "good enough now" for the first team and he cost £75 million pounds. We bought another "ready now" 22 year old defender for £65 million and that was 5 years ago.

£35 million is nothing now. It's not "a huge sum". It gets you Elliot Anderson at a fire sale price. We just sold Harwood-Bellis, who with all due respect to him is a failed youth prospect here, to a Championship club and the price there was £20m and he'd played 4 senior games for us, had spent years out on loan and his contract was up. In fact Spurs just bought an 18 year old right back with one season of professional football under his belt in the Championship and he cost £38m. Newcastle brought in Lewis Hall who is a 19 year old kid with almost no professional experience either and he cost £32m and with all due respect to Hall, he's fucking crap mate. Brajan Gruda cost £28m and 90% of the forum have no idea who that is. I have a mate who is a big fan of that team and a season ticket holder who I talk football with every day and I don't know who he is.
