City And Brugge Playing Out The End Of The Game Knowing They Had Both qualified

Bruge were going through in 24th unless Dinamo Zagreb scored 3 goals in the last 10 mins.

Them trying to salvage a draw at 3-1 down would have rewarded them with Real or Bayern in the Play-Offs instead of Atalanta/Dortmund... ie what they had settled for.
I think they were more worried about us getting another 2 and Zagreb getting another or us getting another 3.

Not sure I would trust theanalyst.com when they get the score wrong in para 1:

Manchester City survived a real scare to book their place in the UEFA Champions League knockout play-offs after coming from behind to beat Club Brugge 2-1

We were also discussing the West Germany/Austria match. But the big difference in this one was that for 80 minutes there was a competitive match that could have gone either way. At 2-1 Brugge were pushing forward trying to equalise and with our ability to blow two goal leads they clearly thought they hd a chance until someone did the Maths and decided a two goal defeat was OK.

It would have been much more dodgy if Stuttgart and PSG had played out a 0-0 draw ensuring that both of them would finish above either Brugge or City whatever the outcome of our game.
Er no...

Don't be daft, a club like Brugge could never get to a European final and if they did it wouldn't be much of an achievement to beat them in the final ..... i mean it certainly wouldn't help in carving out a reputation as European royalty
I see what you've done there !

Coventry City v Bristol City in 1977 - drew 2-2 and both stayed up at the expense of Sunderland.
The accusations were that Cov had the game delayed due to congestion at the turnstiles so the Everton - Sunderland game finished 15 mins before the game at Highfield Road. Hill instructed the score (Everton won (2-0) be shown on the big screen so the players on both sides knew that 2-2 kept both sides up. The final 10 mins was a farce.
I remember that one , 1977?

Sunderland fans despise Coventry to this day, apparently it's always a tasty match off the pitch.

Robbie Savage was proper gutted, when Brugge took their front 3 off. The Last 10 mins was like a chuckle brothers sketch. Pass back to keeper. To me, to you, don't get injured.

Robbie Savage thought he was interviewing for the next big job with his commentary. He’ll be getting pulled in & told, criticise the crowd & tell us how much each City player cost if you want to continue.

Brugge sat back looking to hit us on the break from the start, a draw was enough for them, they scored and we almost got caught out twice, HT, we went for it and leveled, we then scored twice and looked to hold what we had, it was enough for us, we scored the third in the 77th minute, Brugge players were told to hold what they have it's enough.

Sorry but that is not rule breaking nor a conspiracy, also neither team planned it, it was a reaction to circumstances.

It’s no different to the dippers fielding a youth team and throwing their game against PSV.

The new format has been praised to high heaven. It's supposed to deliver much more exciting games and produce a far more competitive tournament. In fact, clubs eliminated were exactly those we would have named last August, and the evidence suggests that clubs such as Real and Bayern took advantage of the new format to concentrate on their leagues knowing they were unlikely to face elimination. City were able to survive a massive crisis caused by injury, ageing and loss of form; of our 11 points we got 7 in the first three games and 3 last night - when our crisis was at its height we managed 1 point! I doubt we would have come through the old format. The large majority of clubs going into the play offs lost 3 matches! Last night City had the ball for the last 10 minutes, not trying to score ... It suited us, it suited Bruges and it suited me down to the ground. It seemed to suit the other 50 odd thousand in the crowd too. Whether it's what UEFA promised and wanted is a different matter.

United 1 Bayern 1 group stage final match 1999. Austria (?) v Germany, world cup1982, final group stage match to send both through at Algeria's expense.

Yeah Austria v W Germany. 1-0 to Germany after about 10 minutes and then nothing happened for about 80.

Both knew exactly what was needed because Algeria had already played their final group game. Rules were changed after that tournament so that final group games happen simultaneously to prevent that happening again.
