North Stand Construction Discussion

If the corners can be joined and filled in, cost v returns permitting, I think a 65,000 capacity is doable and finite for the Etihad stadium and City.

The cable net comes in through the corners which means they can’t be done until it’s gone.

It was recently said by someone at the club that it would be extremely difficult to do. I genuinely wouldn’t expect any further expansion for a long long time.

Keep in mind the new north stand will open 10 years+ after the new south stand. It will be longer before the sides are even considered in my view, and who knows, a new stadium might even be a consideration first.

Factor in that we are getting relegated to the Beezer Homes League for a time so we won’t need a stadium expansion for at least 20 years.

Plans DO exist for a new stadium on the site of the CFA.

It's a complex, long term, futuristic project involving ASDA,Tesla,Athletics & Tennis along with Gas site.

What MAY come bears no resemblance to the present configuration.

Think Saadiyat & Yas.

IF the rags do the 100K "wembley of the north" I would be very surprised if our club would not expand further, however difficult if maybe.

Why not? Assuming it isn't moved.

It would mean changing how the tighteners are grounded, at most but is it really unfeasible?

Bugger!

I have to go down on Sunday now and take some pictures after seeing today's great pictures and drone video of the first viewing platform in situ. :-)
If you take requests, get one of the mock-up bay as well for good measure if you can. For old times, and a shudder here and there.

Is this extension the limit of the stadiums design layout?

If we wanted to make it bigger, would we now be able to?
There have been plans mooted to extend the east & west stands 3rd tiers back a few rows and to extend the ends of them out, but that would involve replacing both roofs and removing the cable net entirely (as it would no longer be necessary). They could just do one side at a time but the cost/return formula for either option isn't great, unless there's something further to be considered. Possibly a full stadium wrap enveloping the spirals could be an option though?

The cable net comes in through the corners and goes right through the middle of where the terracing would be. It would be obstructive and dangerous to have a random cable coming in which would basically be in reach of anyone sat there.

The tension is needed at the corners and with expansion behind each goal, can’t really be supported else where in a way which would be even considered financially viable for such a small capacity increase.

The best we’ll see is them adding in more seats using the space currently available which they’ve already done to a degree at the South Stand end.

Ultimately, it’s why non of the 4 corners have been done. If the corner cable net entries weren’t a problem then the new North Stand would likely cover the comers as well since the working design uses the absolute most space possible for the highest capacity.

Hope they sort the area around the stadium soon a mix of tarmac and cobbles covered in puddles and its filthy the old badge in the ground near Howard Bernstein is filthy. Looking at the grounds around the new Everton stadium it puts the Etihad to shame Not encouraged by the plans they have around the extension either

I was wondering if the stadium was designed with expansion in mind (more than the original conversation to a footballer stadium at least).

As we know, stadium extensions are difficult and expensive. Perhaps it's best that this is where we are and anything more requires a full rebuild.
At some point, you need to design the thing to operate at a set capacity.

Do we want or need a CL+ stadium?

Given the cable net design of the roof I'd say definitely not, in terms of expected expansion. It gives far too many headaches in working around it.

If it hadn't had been for Sport England putting the kibosh on it I think we'd probably have already had a new stadium on the CFA land and be looking at the CFA being where the stadium still is.

Looking at that video it seems that there are two raker beams not yet installed left and right of the lower sections where the terrace haven’t yet been filled in. Am I correct in that assumption?

yes I noticed that too I can only presume its not as easy to do them without interrutipion to fans sat near by , my only guess is that will be Done same time as the roof

60k is plenty big enough for many more years. It’s the perfect size for football and we would be better concentrating on quality not quantity (like our neighbours in the next parish are obsessed with). Crowds aren’t going to get bigger unless ticket prices reduce drastically and that won’t be happening.

Agree about the 60K limit maybe but disagree about the ticket prices restricting it , although that's for another thread.

I haven't really looked where it crosses inside, in fairness. Just the outside. Yiu seem to have, so I'll believe that and save myself the hassle ;)

Transport facilities to and from the stadium need big improvment for 60,000 anymore would be like Wembley, diabolical
Totally agree although the new improved City Square and store will keep a lot of fans away from the queues. I haven’t had a post match pint since the square closed and I won’t be the only one for sure.
